Job Description

Spring Musical Choreographer (Pop/Contemporary/Broadway) Beginning January 2027 Mark Day School seeks a collaborative and innovative Choreographer for our Spring Musical Production. The successful applicant for this position will help advance the school's mission with positive energy, creativity, dedication to a diverse and equitable community, love for children, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to collaborate in partnership with the Drama Director and the wider school community. This is a wonderful opportunity to inspire a cast of enthusiastic middle school and upper elementary students and help them build confidence, skills, and a love for performance. We are looking for a collaborator who can create accessible yet impressive choreography in pop, contemporary, and Broadway styles. You will work closely with our Director, Iliza Abbe, to create dance pieces that are central to the show's storytelling.
Key Responsibilities Choreograph & Teach:
Design and teach original choreography for a cast of middle school students with varied skill levels (from brand new to experienced dancers).
Production Numbers:
Create 3 full-cast production numbers. These pieces should be designed to include the entire cast while providing featured "callouts" or small group sections for stronger dancers.
Focused Pieces:
Develop choreography for a number of smaller, more-focused musical pieces as required by the script.
Storytelling:
Collaborate with Iliza Abbe, the Director, to ensure all movement and dance effectively further the story and support the show's vision.
Positive Environment:
Foster an inclusive, fun, and supportive rehearsal atmosphere that encourages students to take creative risks and do their best work. Qualifications Demonstrable experience choreographing musical theater for young performers. Experience working specifically with middle school-aged students (ages 10-14) and managing a classroom of diverse abilities and energy levels. Strong understanding of pop, contemporary, and classic Broadway dance styles. A collaborative, patient, and positive attitude. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Schedule & Compensation This is a temporary, hourly rate position.
Start Date:
Dance rehearsals begin Wednesday, January 6.
Weekly Rehearsals:
One to two times a week each week. You will work with the Director to select recurring days from the following options: Mondays, 3:30 PM
  • 5:30 PM Wednesdays, 3:30 PM
  • 5:30 PM Thursdays, 3:30 PM
  • 5:30
PM Special Rehearsal:
There is one mandatory Saturday rehearsal on March 20, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. (Additional tech week and performance dates will be provided during the interview process.)
Compensation:
