Job Summary FUMC Northville is seeking a passionate, spiritually grounded, and highly skilled Director of Music to lead and inspire our congregation through a diverse and dynamic musical worship program. In this vital role, you will oversee the development and execution of musical programs that enhance spiritual experiences, foster community engagement, and uphold the church's worship traditions. This role is responsible for fostering a vibrant worship environment by directing multiple vocal choirs, leading congregational singing during worship services, and overseeing the music staff and musicians. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with the pastoral and music teams to select music that aligns with theology and sermon themes, while nurturing the musical gifts of our congregation, both weekly and for special events. We are looking for someone who is not only a talented musician but also self-motivated, organized, and a great communicator who will support the church's mission to help people find, experience, and share God's love through Jesus Christ.

Essential Responsibilities Worship Leadership & Conducting:

Provide the vision, leadership, scheduling, communication, and execution of the church's comprehensive music program Direct (or supervise staff to direct) and rehearse multiple vocal choirs and instrumental groups (e.g., Adult Choir, Handbells, etc.). Lead/facilitate congregational singing during weekly Sunday morning worship services. Plan, coordinate, and execute special musical events and enhanced worship services for major liturgical holidays and other special events (e.g., Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter).

Staff Supervision & Leadership:

Supervise, evaluate, and support the music staff, including the Instrumental Music Director/Accompanist and Children and Youth Music Director. Foster a collaborative, encouraging, and professional team environment. Provide multiple opportunities within the music program to creatively utilize the musical and other talents of the church's congregation and community members, including working with member Music Team Leaders (e.g., liturgical dance)

Collaborative Planning:

Participate fully in weekly worship planning meetings with the Senior Pastor and music staff to select and integrate music that enhances the weekly scripture and message. Manage the music department budget, library, purchases, and instrument maintenance schedules. Perform other music-related duties as required or requested by the Senior Pastor and/or Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Qualifications & Skills Education:

Bachelor's degree or higher in Music, Conducting, Sacred Music, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

Experience:

5-8 years of experience in Music Leadership/directing choirs. Experience leading music worship in a congregational setting is strongly preferred.

Leadership/Communication Skills:

Strong supervisory and interpersonal skills to manage diverse staff members. Approachable, supportive, and kind in working with volunteer musicians of all talent levels effectively. Able to effectively communicate with other church staff, congregation members, member Music Team Leaders, and external vendors as needed.

Musical Proficiency:

Strong understanding of vocal technique, choral and instrumental conducting skills, and the ability to teach these concepts to volunteer singers and instrumentalists. Creativity in developing worshipful and meaningful music programs. Ability to play the piano is a plus but not required.

Availability:

Must be regularly available for Sunday morning worship, Wednesday evening rehearsals, with extended hours during the Advent and Lenten seasons. Daily hours are otherwise flexible, as agreed with the Senior Pastor.

Background Check:

In compliance with our Safe Sanctuaries policy, FUMC staff members will have yearly background screening. This background screening will be done upon hiring.
