Overview This Assistant Director role is intended to prepare the successful candidate this fall to transition into the full Choir Director role for a new location in the Durham/Chapel Hill area starting in February 2027. The Raleigh Choir began in the fall of 2026. We're looking for an enthusiastic, experienced director to bring a second Raleigh-area choir to life and working as Assistant Director to the current Raleigh choir will be a big part of the training.
About Voices Rock:
Voices Rock is a community rock choir network where adults come together to sing the rock and pop songs they know and love — no auditions required. Our singers range from total beginners to lifelong musicians, and what brings them all together is a love of singing and a welcoming community. We were founded in Denver in 2014 and have grown to 17 choirs across Colorado and the Pacific Northwest. Every Voices Rock choir follows the same 10-week session format, performing six songs per session selected by our leadership team in Denver. We handle the logistics — music arrangements, practice tracks, lyric sheets, weekly rehearsal game plans, member registration, venue rental, equipment, and marketing — so directors can focus on what they do best: leading great rehearsals and building community. This Assistant Director role is intended to prepare the successful candidate for a transition to the full Choir Director role at a new location in the Chapel Hill/Durham area, starting in February 2027. The Raleigh Choir began in August of 2026, and we are projecting the choir will have upwards of 80 members this session. We credit the immediate success of building this choir to the unique experience that Voices Rock offers and to the fact that our Raleigh Choir is led by world-class composer, director, and arranger Andy Beck. We're looking for an enthusiastic, experienced director to bring the Chapel Hill/Raleigh choir to life, and working as Assistant Director to the current Raleigh choir will be a big part of the training.
What You'll Do :
Assist Choir Director with leading weekly rehearsals for an adult non-audition choir of mixed skill levels Assist with teaching vocal parts, harmonies, and musical phrasing in an accessible, encouraging way. Our singers use sheet music/octavos, with varying levels of music reading. Learn how to conduct two performances per year (typically May and November) - assistant director may not direct in the show, but will do so once they transition to full directing Assist with creating a rehearsal environment that's energetic, inclusive, and confidence-building — a place people genuinely look forward to showing up to Collaborate with Voices Rock leadership to learn and follow the VR approach to teaching, directing, and communication Help grow and retain your Chapel Hill/Durham choir — through your own enthusiasm and by being the kind of director people rave about to their friends Encourage community-building among your singers, either by organizing social activities yourself or by recruiting a choir member to take it on In the spring of 2027, as the Chapel Hill/Durham Choir Director, you will take the lead on all of the above responsibilities. What We're Looking For Strong choir directing experience, ideally in a community choir or school setting Music Ed/Performance degree preferred Solid understanding of vocal technique, harmony, and music fundamentals Excellent communication and group-management skills — you're comfortable leading a room Ability to inspire and encourage singers of all backgrounds and skill levels A warm, upbeat personality and a genuine love of popular music Comfort promoting the choir and helping it grow — word of mouth starts with you Because this role will transition into the full Director role for a new location, it's important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all description of what makes a great Voices Rock director. Those with a traditional choral conducting background must be open to shedding the classical training and doing what works for this style of music and level of singer. We've also seen success with people who have a musical education background and have worked in the classroom. Sometimes the right director is simply someone with great music chops, abundant energy, and a dynamic leadership presence. This role is perfect for energetic individuals eager to lead adult performers in creating memorable musical experiences. If you thrive in lively environments where your technical expertise meets your passion for the arts, we invite you to bring your talents to our team!
