POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Music & Worship Ministries provides visionary and operational leadership for the music and liturgical life of First United Methodist Church of Oklahoma City. Worship is an essential practice of our congregational life and faith, this position will create an inspiring worship atmosphere that honors our traditions while blending musical styles, ranging from traditional hymns to known praise choruses and contemporary Christian music. This role leads our sanctuary choir and worship team along with pastoral leadership to guide the congregation through the liturgical year, and offers broad oversight for specialized ensembles and facility music partners.

Schedule & Expectations:

This is a full-time, salaried role that requires office hours and regular presence during midweek programming and weekend worship. Attendance and leadership are expected for major Christian holidays (Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Easter), as well as annual church and community traditions (e.g., Blessing of the Shoes, Sunrise Prayer Service, Murrah Memorial Service, and church-wide events).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary & Weekly Ministry Focus Blended Service Planning & Execution:

Select and arrange music for weekly worship services, intentionally integrating traditional hymns, classic praise choruses, and contemporary Christian music into cohesive worship sets. Direct congregational singing and lead worship from an instrument or as a primary vocalist.

Ensemble Directing:

Form, rehearse, and direct the traditional sanctuary choir and contemporary worship teams. Conduct regular rehearsals that prioritize both artistic quality and spiritual encouragement.

Pastoral Collaboration:

Partner weekly with the Senior Pastor to align music with sermon themes and plan worship for special seasons of the Christian calendar (e.g., Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter).

Musician Care & Support:

Recruit, equip, and pastorally support volunteer vocalists, instrumentalists, and key music staff.

Worship Continuity:

Arrange and coordinate qualified substitute worship leaders and musicians for planned vacations or absences to maintain worship continuity.

Periodic & Collaborative Leadership Special Ensembles & Cross-Ministry Support:

Coordinate performance schedules and support key leaders for specialized ensembles (such as the Bell Choir). Partner periodically with the Children's Director to help prepare children for special worship performances (e.g., Palm Sunday, Mother's Day, Father's Day).

Production Partnership:

Work collaboratively with the Production Manager to ensure audio, visual, lighting, and live-streaming elements seamlessly support weekly worship services and special events.

Administrative & Community Oversight Community Music Partner Liaison:

Serve as the primary staff point of contact for facility scheduling and building access for outside music groups utilizing church spaces, specifically the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony and the Oklahoma City Chorus .

Instruments & Library Management:

Oversee routine maintenance, tuning, and care for church-owned instruments (organs, pianos, handbells, and sound gear). Curate physical and digital sheet music libraries and rehearsal schedules.

Budget & Staff Life:

Formulate and manage the annual music ministry budget. Faithfully participate in full staff meetings and church-wide events.

QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES

Personal Faith:

A vital, growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to servant leadership in the local church.

Musical Versatility:

Competent vocalist proficient in leading worship from an instrument (keyboard/piano, guitar, etc.). Strong ability to navigate traditional hymnody, choral arrangements, and modern CCM.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Sacred Music, Music Ministry, or equivalent professional experience leading church music programs.

Relational Leadership:

Skilled at recruiting, coaching, and encouraging volunteer musicians while managing team dynamics with grace and clarity.

Organizational Aptitude:

Strong communication skills with the ability to manage schedules, coordinate facility uses, and collaborate effectively with tech and pastoral staff.

Pay:

$55,000.00 - $67,000.00 per year
