Founded in 1906, the Madeira School is an independent, college preparatory, boarding and day school for girls grades 9-12. Located in McLean, Virginia on a 376-acre wooded campus, Madeira is 12 miles from the center of Washington, DC. Madeira's ambitious academic curriculum emphasizes both content and skills in the context of a college-prep liberal arts education. The Madeira School is seeking a part-time Director of Choral Music to join its faculty beginning in August 2026. The successful candidate will support and achieve the School's mission and vision by effectively facilitating learning in student-centered college preparatory classrooms.

Responsibilities:

Teach and direct the choral program, in a twice per week evening class setting including: Select a variety of music Work directly with the student accompanists Develop and oversee choral music curriculum including mapping of curriculum Teach basic music theory and sight-signing Conduct concerts throughout the year both on and off campus Serve as Music Director for the Winter Musical including: Collaborate with the theater team to ensure all music needs for the performance are met, including preparing audition materials, attending daily afternoon rehearsals, and securing any transposition or rehearsal recording materials Collaborate with the Department Head to organize and arrange the band ensemble of professional musicians Conduct musical band rehearsals and ensure musicians are ready to perform throughout tech week and performances Embrace teaching beginning as well as advanced level students Create opportunities for performances which reflect diversity in musical styles, periods, genres, and backgrounds Support a student-centered project-based learning environment for musicians Collaborate with Private Instructors for special performances and rehearsals. Assist with running Soiree Recitals during the school year Collaborate with Vocal, Theater, and Dance ensembles for special pieces. Instruct and support vocal soloists for special performances with other arts disciplines Manage a part-time (50%) load to include: evening teaching (Monday/Thursday 6:30pm -8:00pm), musical rehearsals (daily 2:45pm - 5pm throughout the winter season), attending day-time department meetings, professional development days and overseeing the Choral Music program Plan and prepare innovative and rigorous instructional content Work collaboratively with a team of faculty, colleagues, administrators and parents Maintain accurate student records such as grades and comments and communicate such data in accordance with the Academic Calendar and School expectations Know how girls learn and use this knowledge to guide instructional and curricular decisions; apply principles of mind, brain and education science when teaching, developing curriculum, and assessing student learning Support and act in accordance with the school and department's mission and values.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in music, music education or choral conducting; Master's degree a plus Experience directing choirs; adolescent voices preferred Strong knowledge of vocal production and choral techniques Keyboard proficient Ability to demonstrate growth mindset, optimism, and belief that all students can learn required Ability to innovate and think creatively about education Ability to make contribution to the School outside one's academic department, including to activities program, residential program, and interdisciplinary offerings Ability to use and adapt to a wide-array of technology as tools to support and deepen student learning and instruction Commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of School life Uphold the School's professional standards including punctuality, courtesy and discretion
