The Patient Accounts Specialist will work under the general supervision of the Business Office Manager, and this position is primarily responsible for medical billing, accounts receivables, adjustments , collections and referral authorizations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Check registration for errors. Check eligibility. Collect patient payments when necessary, over the phone Prepare collection reports. Bill patient and insurance companies. Post payments from insurance carriers and patients. Research denials by contacting insurance companies and patients for additional information. Write appeals and letters for denied claims. Re-bill accounts and bill to the insurance companies as secondary. Ensure compliant and accurate billing of charges and payments. Follow up on patient and insurance AR. Answer phone inquiries from patients and insurance companies. Review accounts for procedure medical necessity and obtain prior authorization Communicate patient responsibility amounts to patients prior to surgeries / procedures Prepare refunds. Take deposits to bank when needed. Maintain assigned productivity standards. Provide optimal customer service and patient care. Attend and actively participate in all department, team and/or committee meetings. Comply with all company, department and location specific policies, procedures and mandatory learning requirements. Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designee
Required Education, Training & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required. 3+ years' billing experience preferred. Medical Billing Certification preferred. Previous experience with hospital/clinic billing preferred. Previous experience in a busy physician practice preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ten key skills required. Knowledge of medical terminology and imaging procedures preferred. Knowledge of healthcare insurance procedures preferred. Excellent customer service skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Computer literate, including ability to work with and learn new software. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Strict confidentiality and professionalism required. Ability to apply written guidelines and standardized work practices, identify problems and communicate clearly. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians, co-workers, patients and their families. Ability to maintain patience and tact when interacting with hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, visitors, etc. Ability to coordinate work schedule with requirements of position (may include overtime).
