We are seeking a Trust & Estates Associate Attorney to join our firms Trusts & Estates practice. The associate will provide counsel and legal services to individuals, families, and fiduciaries on estate planning, tax planning, trust administration, probate, and related matters. The ideal candidate will draft wills, trusts, and related documents; advise clients on tax and probate implications; and manage estate and trust administration with an emphasis on clarity, accuracy, and excellent client service. Key Responsibilities Advise clients on estate planning strategies, including wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, durable powers of attorney, and advance health care directives.
Draft, review, and execute estate planning documents such as wills, trusts, trust funding instruments, beneficiary designations, and related agreements.
Provide counsel on federal and state estate and gift tax issues, coordinate with tax advisors, and prepare or review tax-related filings when necessary.
Manage probate and trust administration matters: prepare probate petitions, orders, accountings, inventories, and required filings; communicate with courts, beneficiaries, and fiduciaries.
Conduct legal research and keep current with developments in trust, estate, and tax law; prepare memos and client updates on relevant legal changes.
Represent clients and fiduciaries in contested proceedings, fiduciary litigation, guardianship matters, and dispute resolution when necessary.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across tax, corporate, and litigation teams to deliver integrated solutions for clients with complex estate and business planning needs.
Build and maintain strong client relationships by providing responsive, practical legal advice and clear communication about timelines, risks, and fees.
Assist in business development efforts, including client pitches, seminars, and content development to support practice growth.
Maintain accurate matter files, billing records, and comply with firm policies and professional ethical obligations. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active admission to the state bar in which the firm practices.
15 years of experience practicing in trust & estates, estate planning, probate, or related tax practice; transferable experience considered.
Strong knowledge of trusts, wills, probate administration, and federal/state estate and gift tax principles.
Experience drafting estate planning documents and administering estates and trusts, including court filings and fiduciary accountings.
Excellent legal research, writing, and drafting skills; attention to detail and ability to explain complex concepts to clients clearly.
Experience working with tax professionals and familiarity with tax returns and filings related to estates (e.g., Form 706) preferred.
Comfortable in client-facing roles with strong interpersonal skills and professional judgment when advising families and fiduciaries.
Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines independently while collaborating with team members.
Preferred:
LLM in Taxation or Estate Planning, certification such as CTFA, or bar certification in estate planning/probate, and experience with estate planning software and case management systems.
