Location:
710 N Tower Ave, Centralia, WA Start date: Mid-to-late October 2026
Compensation:

Schedule:
~7-8 AM opening shifts to ~3-4 PM close 5 days/week, some weekends required; Valentine's Day and Mother's Day About the role The Fernseed is opening its second location in Centralia — a garden center and floral shop — and we're hiring a Floral Department Lead to run the floral program. This role owns daily floral production: processing, arrangements, the retail cooler, and wedding and event fulfillment. You'll buy alongside the owner at first, learning Fernseed's sourcing approach and vendor relationships, then take over floral and indoor plant buying for the location. About Fernseed The Fernseed is an independent plant and flower shop in Tacoma, Washington, opening a second location in Centralia in fall 2026. We sell houseplants, fresh floral, and indoor plant care products, with a focus on local sourcing and highlighting handmade ceramics. The Centralia store adds a full garden center—outdoor plants, natives, cut-flower gardening—to what we've been doing in Tacoma since 2019. Floral production Receive floral deliveries and complete same-day processing Build arrangements and floral products to Fernseed's established recipes and design standards — designs are set by our Tacoma team; this role executes them with skill and consistency Maintain the retail floral cooler and standing product lines Run wedding and event floral fulfillment: ordering, production scheduling, and day-of execution from our standardized menus Train staff on floral processing and production Floral opens the shop — this role typically works early shifts, handling morning processing before the retail team arrives Buying and sourcing Buy floral product alongside the owner at first — learning the vendor mix and Fernseed's sourcing standards — then take over floral buying for the location Order to volume: buy the right amounts for retail, standing products, and events, keeping waste low on a perishable product Source to Fernseed's Slow Flowers commitment: local and seasonal first, with most product from growers within 400 miles; no floral foam, ever Lead buyers for indoor plants Coordination Work with the Location Manager on scheduling so floral production is staffed — including where team members cross over between departments Coordinate with the classes & events manager on floral support for workshops and events Down the road This role can take on cut-flower growing in our ¾-acre yard — not a day-one duty, but an option for someone who wants it Who you are You're good at giving and receiving design feedback — you can hear "that's not quite our look" without bruising, and you can coach someone else's hands the same way. You think fast when things go sideways: the right pink doesn't show up for Saturday's wedding, and you know how to sub it out, keep production moving, and communicate the change to the customer with finesse. You're obsessed with production efficiency and eliminating waste: orders out the door, a tidy workspace, the right product bought for the volume that week. You're not over-ordering a flower because you love it and watching it die in the cooler — you're working on margin, all the time. This is a kitchen job, not a pretty-flowers job. You get that. But you also think flowers are pretty. What we're looking for Design sense matters more than floral design experience — cake decorating, color work, visual merchandising, or any craft with an eye all count. You'll be executing established designs, not creating your own, so we're as happy training someone new to floral as hiring someone experienced. Knowledge of the flower world is essential: you understand product, ordering, and what it takes to buy perishable inventory at volume without waste Experience in production work under time pressure — floral, kitchen, bakery, catering, or similar Comfortable training others and being the point person for a department Available for early morning shifts and weekends Benefits PTO accrues from day one, increasing with tenure Generous staff discounts (up to 50%)
