Job Description

Sales Engineer I-II

SUMMARY

The Sales Engineer supports profitable business growth by preparing technical quotations, coordinating cost and hour estimates with Engineering, and assisting the commercial team in evaluating opportunities. This role bridges Marketing and Engineering to ensure quotes accurately reflect current engineering practices, product capability, and manufacturability. Duties include collecting specifications, developing preliminary layouts, costing activities, and maintaining quoting tools and data.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Quotation Development & Support

Prepare technical quotations for all product lines, ensuring completeness and accuracy.

Gather and interpret customer specifications for quoting.

Develop cost estimates, conduct sizing calculations, generate general arrangements and estimate engineering hours.

Assist sales reps in developing technical narratives for quotes.

Maintain, update, and utilize quoting tools and templates.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Serve as liaison between Marketing and Engineering to ensure quoting reflects current engineering design practices.

Participate in engineering design reviews and maintain current engineering practices.

Work with Marketing to evaluate new opportunities with regard to feasibility, fit, strategic alignment, and risk.

Communicate with Service, Marketing, and Aftermarket as needed.

Customer & Market Interaction

Assist in responding to customer technical questions related to quoted products.

Create model comparisons for market analysis in new product development.

Support Sales Reps in developing value propositions and technical explanations of system performance.

Participate in customer meetings and calls as needed.

Occasionally travel to customer sites and product shows.

Assist in other activities to promote sales of product.

Quality, Tools, and Process Improvement

Maintain accurate and organized quoting records and version control.

Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to quoting accuracy, process speed, and data quality.

Support Marketing and Engineering in developing future quoting tools and documentation.

JOB COMPLEXITY

Work involves moderate technical complexity. Must be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and requirements, and understand impacts of changes on cost, schedule, and manufacturing. Errors in cost or specification interpretation may create financial or credibility risks.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No direct supervision responsibility. Must be able to manage time without supervision and work effectively under pressure.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

1-5 years of relevant engineering or technical experience.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.

Familiarity with CAD tools (Inventor, AutoCAD) preferred for simple layouts.

Working knowledge of engineering fundamentals and mechanical systems.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to write clear technical proposals and communicate effectively across engineering and commercial teams. Ability to interact with customers professionally via email, phone, and presentation.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and evaluate options with incomplete information. Capable of interpreting instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to apply sound engineering judgement and commercial considerations simultaneously.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an office environment with occasional visits to manufacturing, and testing areas. Some travel may be required for customer site visits, presentations and/or trade shows (5-10%)
