Outside Sales Representative Building Materials & Contractor Sales Williams Building Supply | Full-Time | Outside Sales Williams Building Supply is growing, and we are ready to add another Outside Sales Representative to our team. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with builders and contractors, likes being out in the field, and wants the opportunity to build a book of business they can be proud of. This is not a counter-sales job. You will be expected to get out, develop relationships, find projects, follow up, and become the person your customers call when they need building materials. You will not be doing it alone. Our purchasing, inside sales, yard, delivery, and management teams are here to help you take care of the customer from the first quote through the final delivery. What You'll Do Your job is simple to describe: build relationships, find opportunities, win profitable business, and take care of your customers.
Develop new relationships with builders, contractors, remodelers, and other professional customers.
Stay in regular contact with existing Williams customers and look for ways to earn more of their business.
Spend time in the field visiting jobsites, contractors, and prospective customers—not waiting for the phone to ring.
Learn what projects are coming up and stay involved early enough to help with planning and material needs.
Review plans, blueprints, material lists, and jobsite information.
Perform or coordinate material takeoffs and prepare accurate quotes.
Follow up on open quotes and keep track of upcoming jobs.
Turn opportunities into profitable sales while staying competitive in the market.
Coordinate with purchasing, inside sales, the yard, and delivery teams so customers get what they need when they need it.
Keep customers informed about availability, lead times, substitutions, and delivery expectations.
Help customers choose products and offer practical alternatives when there is a better value or solution.
Look beyond a single item or category and identify opportunities to supply more of the overall project.
Take ownership when there is a problem and work with the team to get it resolved quickly and professionally.
Maintain an organized pipeline, follow-up schedule, and customer list.
Work toward established sales, gross-profit, account-growth, and activity goals. What Success Looks Like We are not looking for someone who simply takes orders. The right person will gradually build a strong, profitable territory and become a trusted resource for the contractors they serve. You will likely do well in this role if you:
Enjoy building long-term relationships and earning repeat business.
Understand that consistent follow-up is often what wins the job.
Are comfortable walking a jobsite and having a practical conversation with a contractor.
Can compete on price without giving away margin unnecessarily.
Look for the next project instead of waiting on the next order.
Communicate clearly with both customers and the people inside the store who support your accounts.
Take ownership of a customer from the first conversation through the final delivery.
Want to keep developing new accounts while taking good care of the customers you already have.
The Background We're Looking For Building-material experience is strongly preferred, but it is not the only path into this role. We will also consider proven outside-sales professionals from related construction or trade industries who understand relationship-based selling.
Relevant experience may include:
Lumber and building materials
Contractor sales
Roofing, siding, decking, or masonry
Windows and doors
Millwork
Hardware and construction supply
Plumbing or electrical supply
Concrete or masonry supply
Construction estimating
Residential or commercial construction
Other relationship-driven B2B sales roles Skills That Matter

Good math and estimating ability.
Ability to read construction plans—or the willingness and ability to learn.
Strong follow-up habits and good organization.
Comfort with email, computers, quoting systems, and mobile technology.
Ability to work independently in the field while still operating as part of a team.
A competitive, self-motivated approach to sales.
