The Garden connects people of all ages to nature through inspiring cultural events and high-quality environmental education programs for school groups, children, families, and adults.
Position Overview:
Cape Fear Botanical Garden is seeking an Environmental Education Specialist who is passionate about working with children and fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature. This role is an integral part of our education team and involves planning, assisting with, and leading engaging educational programs for diverse audiences ranging from Pre-K through adults. The Environmental Education Specialist will teach hands-on, standards-based programs in both indoor and outdoor settings and contribute to curriculum development and program preparation. Responsibilities shift seasonally, with a focus on:
    Spring:
    School field trip programs
      Summer:
      Camps and youth programs
        Fall/Winter:
        Program development and community events This is a full-time position that requires flexibility, including weekday and weekend hours, evenings, and holidays as needed for programs and events. Key Responsibilities
        • Plan and teach engaging, hands-on environmental education programs for small and large groups
        • Assist with curriculum development aligned with educational standards and learning objectives
        • Adapt teaching strategies for mixed ages, learning styles, and diverse populations
        • Lead programs in indoor classrooms and outdoor garden settings
        • Support seasonal programming, including field trips, summer camps, and community events
        • Prepare materials and educational activities for classes and programs
        • Work collaboratively with a close-knit education team while also managing tasks independently
        • Travel off-site to schools, libraries, and community locations as needed
        Qualifications & Experience:
        • Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred (education, environmental science, biology, horticulture, or related field)
        • Experience creating and implementing educational programs (formal or informal education settings)
        • Knowledge of environmental education techniques, native ecology, and/or horticulture
        • Experience working with diverse audiences and age groups
        • Strong communication, organization, and classroom/group management skills
        • Comfortable teaching outdoors in a variety of conditions
        • Reliable personal transportation required for off-site programming and supply purchases
        Compensation:
