About the

Job:

The Environmental Technician will report to the Environmental Coordinator and is responsible for safe and efficient sampling, data collection, and assistance with regulatory reporting. Additionally, the Environmental Technician will be responsible for conducting inspections and or monitoring related to air, water and waste compliance programs. The schedule for this position is 4 days on at the remote mine site located about 45-miles north of Juneau, accessible only through company transportation, and 3 days off with the occasional 8 days on/6 days off schedule for required weekend coverage.

Responsibilities:

Stop work for safety concerns, and abide by safety best practices, policies and proceduresPerform soil, groundwater, surface water, waste, sediment and air samplingPerform manual stream flow measurements and associated hydrology monitoringPerform employee environmental awareness training as neededCollect, review and analyze environmental dataInput data into an environmental databaseUse field instruments and equipment as necessary to meet health and safety as well as field sampling and O&M requirementsAssist with preparation of routine submittals to regulatory agencies to document system performance and compliance with permit requirementsDocument all field activities and notesPerform subcontractor oversightCommunicate effectively with project managers and client personnelHas a high degree of health and safety awarenessWorks within defined scopes, schedules and budgets while producing quality workMaintains knowledge of sampling procedures and protocols in accordance with recognized industry standardsPerform other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Associates or bachelors degree in environmental sciences or applied sciences preferredApproximately 1-3 years of environmental field experience in an industrial setting preferredPreference given to Alaska residents.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to safely perform work in a mining environment, including, but not limited to:

Working outdoors in a range of environmental conditions, including rain, snow, ice, wind, cold temperatures, and periods of limited daylight.

Frequent standing and walking on uneven surfaces on surface and underground.

Climbing stairs, ladders, and escapeways.

Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds often and up to 50 pounds on occasion, pushing and pulling equipment or materials up to 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. Employees must be able to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when applicable, work in varying environmental conditions, and participate in emergency response and evacuation procedures.

Mine Site Information:

The Kensington Mine is located within the historic Berners Bay Mining District, a region with deep mining roots that date back over a century. The mine site is a remote camp located approximately 45 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. Transportation to and from the mine site happens twice per day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) and takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. To get to the mine site, employees board a bus in Juneau that transports to the Yankee Cove dock (~30 minutes), then board a boat (~45 minutes), then board another bus to the camp area (~15 minutes). Food and housing is provided on-site to employees. Rooms are dormitory style with two twin beds, a TV, and storage for your personal belongings.
