Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina seeks a Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform complex diagnostic testing supporting patient care, education, and research. Responsibilities include analyzing specimens in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and molecular labs; operating and maintaining automated analyzers; validating and reporting accurate results; and following strict quality control, safety, and regulatory standards. The MLS will collaborate with clinicians, faculty, and trainees in a diverse, inclusive academic environment, contribute to process improvements, and support teaching and research initiatives while maintaining excellent patient-focused service. Responsibilities Perform and interpret complex diagnostic tests in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and molecular laboratories. Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory analyzers and equipment, troubleshooting issues as needed. Ensure accurate, timely reporting of results and communicate critical values to clinical teams. Apply and document quality control and quality assurance procedures to meet regulatory standards. Adhere to CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and MUSC policies on safety, infection control, and compliance. Process and verify specimens, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and chain of custody. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, researchers, and trainees in an academic medical setting. Participate in training of students and new staff and support educational activities in the lab. Contribute to process improvements, validation studies, and research-related laboratory projects. Maintain detailed records and use the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for test ordering and result entry.
