The Department of Parks and Recreations with Sonoma State Historic Park , is located in the heart of California's picturesque wine country and birthplace of the California Bear Flag, this park offers the opportunity to experience California's rich history spread across multiple historic sites near Sonoma Plaza, including Mission San Francisco Solano, General Vallejo's home and the Sonoma Barracks. Sonoma State Historic Park is the reporting location for this position. With this internship, the intern will be working under the Relevancy & History program . The purpose of the Relevancy and History Program is to develop and model strategies for community-engaged research; inclusive and relevant historical interpretation; and develop pathways to employment in Parks for a new generation of students who reflect the demographics (and diversity) of the state. Specifically, the program aims to enhance interpretive practices and the relevancy of California's state parks to today's students and stakeholders, residents, and visitors, and especially the most under-resourced and underrepresented community members. The Department of Parks and Recreations is seeking to hire a student assistant under the Relevancy & History Program which provides a dynamic, hands-on experience in the Interpretation and Education department. The student assistant will contribute directly to social media content development and posts, special event planning, development and execution, and overall support of the Relevancy & History project, including historical research and interpretation. The student assistant is expected to manage their own project(s) with support and periodic check-ins from park staff. Work Schedule Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. The internship is based on-site at the Sonoma State Historic Park, Sonoma Barracks. Hours and duration can be adjusted to align with academic schedules or credit requirements. Additional Work Schedule Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $17.00 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Strong interest in public history, education, or cultural interpretation. Ability to work independently and manage deadlines. Strong written communication and research skills. Willingness to receive and incorporate feedback. Professional demeanor in all tasks and communications. Preferred Qualifications Experience with digital and social media, public relations, historical research, and special event management. Duties and Responsibilities Completion of at least five (5) engaging social media posts related to the Relevancy & History Program. Participation in at least 1 special event during the semester. Skill development in special event planning, execution and overall process. 10-15-minute capstone video presentation summarizing your work and experience. Skill development in storytelling, interpretation, and public history methods. Other duties as assigned in accordance with the mission of State Parks. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in a hybrid environment and with 5% field work. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties. Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement.
