About the
Role:
The Independent Living Counselor plays a vital role in supporting individuals with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities as they build the skills needed to achieve greater self-sufficiency and successfully transition into adulthood. The counselor will also provide mentorship and encouragement to help prepare recipients for independence. By fostering confidence, self-advocacy, and personal growth, this role contributes significantly to improving quality of life and long-term success.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Former experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and physical disabilities.
Former experience serving as a mentor, counselor, coach, or participation in Big Brother/Big Sister or similar youth development programs preferred.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport.
Reliable transportation and ability to travel within the community as needed.
Ability to maintain professionalism, patience, and compassion while supporting individuals with varying needs.
Responsibilities:
Provide individualized support and coaching to improve independent living skills, including organization, daily routines, self-care, and time management. Assist with social skills development by encouraging positive peer interactions, communication skills, and community engagement activities. Support money management and budgeting skills, including understanding spending habits, banking basics, and financial responsibility. Help develop basic driving readiness skills, transportation awareness, and safe community navigation. Maintain accurate documentation of services provided, progress toward goals, and observations. Foster a safe, respectful, and empowering environment that promotes dignity, independence, and personal growth.
