Position Summary The Personal Care Attendant provides direct, person-centered assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities in their home and community. The PCA supports each individual in maintaining independence, dignity, health, safety, and participation in everyday activities. Services must be provided according to the individual's approved support plan, service authorization, agency policies, and applicable APD and Medicaid requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Personal Care Attendant may be responsible for: Assisting individuals with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene. Assisting with mobility, transfers, positioning, and ambulation when appropriate. Providing assistance with eating and meal preparation. Encouraging individuals to participate in daily activities as independently as possible. Providing supervision and assistance necessary to maintain the individual's health and safety. Supporting individuals with community activities, appointments, errands, shopping, and recreational activities when authorized. Assisting with light housekeeping related to the individual's care and immediate living environment. Assisting with laundry and maintaining clean clothing and linens. Providing companionship and social interaction. Following the individual's support plan and identified goals. Encouraging choice, self-determination, independence, and community inclusion. Observing and reporting changes in the individual's physical condition, behavior, mood, or functioning. Reporting suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, injuries, incidents, or safety concerns according to agency and reporting requirements. Following emergency procedures and contacting appropriate personnel when necessary. Maintaining accurate service documentation, progress notes, time records, and other required documentation. Documenting services on the date they are provided and ensuring records accurately reflect the services performed. Maintaining confidentiality of all consumer information. Respecting the rights, privacy, dignity, culture, preferences, and personal choices of each individual. Following infection-control and universal precaution procedures. Maintaining professional boundaries with consumers and their families. Attending required training, staff meetings, and competency evaluations. Performing other duties related to the individual's authorized services as assigned. Personal Care Responsibilities Depending on the individual's authorized needs, duties may include assistance with: Bathing and showering Oral hygiene Grooming Dressing Toileting Incontinence care Eating and feeding assistance Mobility Walking and ambulation Transfers Positioning Skin observation Personal hygiene Meal preparation Household activities directly related to the individual's care Employees must not perform services outside their training, authorization, scope of responsibility, or the individual's approved service plan. Documentation Responsibilities The Personal Care Attendant must: Complete service documentation accurately and timely. Record the actual services provided. Document consumer progress, participation, and significant observations. Immediately report unusual incidents or changes in condition. Never falsify service records, timesheets, progress notes, or electronic visit information. Maintain all records in accordance with agency confidentiality requirements.
Minimum Qualifications Applicants should:
Be at least 18 years of age. Possess the ability to read, write, understand, and communicate effectively. Demonstrate the ability to safely provide personal care and supportive services. Successfully complete all required background screening. Complete all required APD, Medicaid, agency, and position-specific training. Maintain current required certifications and training throughout employment. Demonstrate compassion, patience, dependability, professionalism, and respect for individuals with developmental disabilities. Be able to follow written support plans and verbal instructions. Have reliable transportation when transportation or community-based assistance is part of the assignment. Preferred Qualifications CPR and First Aid certification. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to perform the physical duties required by the consumer's individual needs, which may include: Standing and walking for extended periods. Bending, reaching, kneeling, and stooping. Assisting with transfers and mobility. Pushing or maneuvering mobility equipment. Performing personal care activities safely. Reasonable accommodations will be considered when appropriate. Professional Conduct Personal Care Attendants are expected to: Treat every consumer with dignity and respect. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Protect consumer confidentiality. Report to work on time and remain for the entire authorized shift. Avoid sleeping, personal errands, excessive cellphone use, or other activities that interfere with consumer care. Never accept inappropriate gifts, borrow money, use a consumer's property without authorization, or engage in financial transactions with consumers. Never physically, verbally, emotionally, sexually, or financially abuse or exploit a consumer. Follow all Care About You policies and procedures.
