LATCHKEY ASSISTANT

Bath Community Schools — Part-time Before-school hours: 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. | After-school hours: 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (May vary based on days needed) Applicants may apply for the before-school shift, the after-school shift, or both.

$16.18 per hour SUMMARY Bath Community Schools is seeking Before and After School Care Assistants to supervise and engage school-age children enrolled in the district's before- and after-school care program at Bath Elementary School. The assistant provides a safe, supervised, and welcoming environment during the hours immediately before and after the regular school day, leads age-appropriate activities, supports students with homework and quiet study, and communicates professionally with families and district staff. The position follows the school calendar. Additional hours may be available during school breaks, professional development days, and half-days if the district operates the program on those dates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises children at all times during program hours, maintaining continuous visual and auditory awareness of assigned students indoors, outdoors, and during all transitions. Maintains required child-to-staff ratios and notifies the program supervisor immediately whenever staffing coverage or ratios are at risk. Plans and leads age-appropriate activities, including games, crafts, physical activity, and free-choice play, that provide opportunities for physical, social, and intellectual development. Provides homework support and supervises quiet study time. Establishes and reinforces behavioral expectations consistent with building and district expectations; redirects behavior, de-escalates conflict, and encourages cooperation and respectful interaction among students. Records daily attendance and verifies arrival and release of children only to authorized adults consistent with program sign-in and sign-out procedures. Prepares and serves snacks in compliance with the same nutrition requirements that apply to district food service during the regular school day; observes documented allergies and dietary restrictions. Sets up program spaces and restores classrooms and shared spaces to instructional condition at the end of each session. Administers basic first aid and follows district procedures for emergencies, medication, incident documentation, and access to student emergency information. Reports accidents, injuries, behavioral incidents, and concerns to the program supervisor, and fulfills mandated reporter obligations under the Child Protection Law, 1975 PA 238. Communicates professionally with parents and guardians at arrival and dismissal and refers substantive concerns to the program supervisor. Maintains strict confidentiality of student and family information consistent with FERPA and district policy. Completes all district-required training and maintains required certification. Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None. This position has no supervisory authority over district employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Eighteen years of age or older. High school diploma or equivalent. Valid certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid issued by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or a comparable approved organization, obtained within three months of beginning work in the program and maintained thereafter, as required by MCL 380.1285a. The district will provide or reimburse the cost of initial certification. Successful criminal history check and unprofessional conduct check under MCL 380.1230 and MCL 380.1230a, conducted to the same standard applied to individuals hired as teachers, as required by MCL 380.1285a(2)(e). Completion of district-required mandated reporter and safety training. Preferred Prior experience working with school-age children in a child care, camp, recreation, coaching, tutoring, or classroom setting. Coursework or credential in education, child development, or recreation. Experience supporting students with behavioral or social-emotional needs. Bilingual or multilingual ability.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to supervise and engage a group of school-age children independently and with limited direct oversight. Ability to exercise sound judgment regarding student safety and to act decisively in an emergency. Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional with children, families, and staff in unstructured and high-energy settings. Ability to plan and lead activities that hold the interest of a mixed-age group. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with parents, guardians, and district staff. Consistent and punctual attendance. The program cannot operate below required staffing levels, and dependable attendance is an essential requirement of this position. Ability to perform duties consistent with district requirements and Board of Education policy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in classrooms, the gymnasium, and outdoors on playgrounds and fields, including in adverse weather. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods; sit on the floor or in child-sized furniture and rise unassisted; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach; and move quickly across a room, gymnasium, or playground to respond to a child. The employee must frequently lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds, such as supply bins, folding tables, and recreational equipment. The employee must have vision and hearing sufficient to supervise a group of children across an open indoor or outdoor space and to recognize signs of distress, injury, or unsafe behavior. The employee will work in buildings occupied by students and staff and must conduct themselves accordingly.
