Laurel Hill School

School Social Worker

Job Description

School Social Worker — Laurel Hill School Full-Time, 10-Months (2026-2027 School Year)| On-Campus |
East Setauket, NY Start Date:
August 24th, 2026 About Laurel Hill School Laurel Hill School is an independent school serving students from preschool through Grade 8 on Long Island. We're small on purpose. Our teachers know their students — their strengths, their worries, and what a hard week looks like for them — and that knowledge is the thing our families value most. We're hiring our first full-time School Social Worker to strengthen that support: someone who can give students a steady, skilled person to talk to, give our teachers and families a clear partner when a child is struggling, and help shape how we look after wellbeing across the whole school. This is a role with room to build. You won't be inheriting someone else's system — you'll be designing ours. What you'll do Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling to students referred for social, emotional, or behavioral concerns Respond to students in acute distress, and follow up to make sure they're steady Support students through hard transitions — bereavement, family separation, illness, starting at a new school Carry out psychosocial assessments, and judge what we can support in school versus what needs outside clinical care Refer families to external providers, and coordinate with those providers so in-school support lines up with outside treatment Partner with families: keep them informed, obtain the consents you need, and give them practical guidance for home Advise teachers and administrators on individual students, and on classroom strategies that will help Keep secure, accurate counseling records, and hold the confidentiality line with students and families — including being clear about its limits Design and deliver social-emotional learning across the grades, from friendship and conflict in the early years through online safety and peer pressure in Middle School Train our staff on student mental health, recognizing warning signs, and when to refer Run parent workshops on child and adolescent wellbeing Shape the school's approach to bullying prevention and student support, and tell us where it needs to be better What we're looking for Required Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program Current New York State LMSW or LCSW license in good standing Experience working with children or adolescents Ability to pass all pre-employment screening, including background checks Preferred LCSW — independent clinical licensure Experience in a school setting Comfort working across a wide age range, from early childhood through Grade 8 What makes someone thrive here: good judgment about when to hold something and when to escalate it, warmth that kids actually trust, and the ability to give a teacher a straight answer about what to do on Monday morning. Compensation & Benefits Salary is commensurate with experience. Laurel Hill School offers a full benefits package and a collaborative, professionally supportive environment.
