Maximize student participation on all levels of competition Produce a school spelling bee winner to participate competitively in the DELCO contest
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Submit a request to Home and School for spelling bee booklets. Contact the Delaware County Daily Times to request the books for your school. Request check from Home and School and pick up books at the Delaware County Daily Times office. Set the date for the school spelling bee. Check with the office to see that there are no conflicting dates. January is a good time for the spelling bee. Select words for a pre-test. Send these to the middle school Language Arts teachers. Have them send you their top 10 scorers who agree to be in the school spelling bee. Establish a date for practice sessions for the students. Schedule custodian about the dry run day and the actual day of the spelling bee. Provide a diagram of where chairs, microphones, and table are to be set up. Solicit teachers to volunteer to be word caller, dictionary person, and judges. Arrange to video tape the spelling bee. Then request that it be shown on "Inside Interboro." Arrange for pictures after the event to be sent into the local newspaper. Invite the 5 th grade teachers to the spelling bee to watch along with the middle school Organize, conduct and host school spelling bee (assembly) Order trophies, usually a champion and first runner up. Select words from the booklet for the spelling been and type list. Arrange words first from the beginning list, then the intermediate list, then the advanced list. Contact the Paideia people who publish the spelling bee booklets and order a dictionary to accompany the booklet. Write an introduction for the person who does the word pronunciation. Send a note to the Principal informing her/him which teachers will be helping with the spelling bee; therefore their students will have to be monitored in the audience. Compose a letter to go home with the participants informing them of the day of the spelling bee. Send a thank you letter to Home and School for its support. Purchase gifts for the custodian and teachers who helped. After the spelling bee, have the winner bring in a recent picture, fill out the participation form, and mail it to the Daily Times before the deadline. Attend the county spelling bee to support the winners.
