Otterbein United Methodist Church Job Description Director of Family Ministries OUMC Dir. of Family Ministries- Updated 9/21/2026.

Status:
Full Time, Exempt Job Relationships:
The Director of Family Ministries is under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor with the encouragement and support of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. A formal performance review is required annually.
Ministry Summary:
Provide ministry, outreach, and education with the primary responsibility of leading children and youth to be rooted in Jesus Christ, relating with each other and reaching into the world.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Schedule weekly office hours in order to be available to members of Otterbein UMC. Relate the Gospel to the culture of today and make the Bible come alive for children and youth. Guide them to Jesus and disciple those who know Christ into strong believers with a solid Biblical knowledge base. Work respectfully with other church staff in a way that will provide support in meeting the goals and fulfill the vision and mission of the church. Build meaningful connections between the children, youth and the congregation. Select curriculum for Children's church and Sunday School and order as needed. Create and maintain a schedule for nursery workers. Recruit and maintain a roster of volunteers to assist with the Nursery, Children's church, Children and Youth Sunday school and activities. Maintain a database of clearances for volunteers and notify them when updates are needed. Schedule and conduct Safe Sanctuary Training meetings as necessary. Participate in worship and church events. Meet and build relationships with parents of children and youth. Provide communication of children and youth programs to children, youth, parents, families, staff, and the congregation. Report to the Administrative Council detailing activities, projects and plans at quarterly meetings. . Attend staff meetings, administrative council meetings, regularly scheduled youth group meetings, Christian Education meetings as needed, annual Church Conference of Otterbein UMC and other committee meetings where your attendance is requested. Attend retreats, seminars or other events as directed by the Pastor. (At the Church's expense) Lead and/or facilitate all Children Programs including: Worship Leadership (Periodically, in consultation with the Pastor) Local service projects and off-site mission trips and youth programs Special events and activities including but not limited to Vacation Bible School and Easter egg hunt. Children and Youth Sunday school, Sunday evening youth group meetings—developing the curriculum, scheduling volunteers Updating the Children's and Youth's websites and Facebook pages to include relevant news and events, sharing pictures and videos and making announcements for parents Creating online (including videos and posters) and in-house promotions including the digital sign for the children's and youth's ministries Recruit, develop and empower youth leaders, building an effective team-led ministry. Develop ways for the Youth and Adult members of Otterbein to build meaningful connections that will encourage the Youth to become involved in the larger church mission. Be a liaison between the church and other community organizations, people and resources that relate to youth and youth ministries. Maintain accurate records for all children and youth as well as parental permission slips for any off-church property activities. Maintain accurate financial records, receipts, and expenses to follow the budget. The Director is responsible for submission of a yearly budget request to the Finance Committee by October. Keep records of youth participation and manage the family ministry budget. Develop curriculum/course of study for Sunday evening youth meetings and Sunday morning Sunday school classes. Be an advocate for children and youth and educate the congregation about the hopes, concerns, and needs of youth in the local church and community. Is subject to the rules and regulations stated in the Personnel Policy of Otterbein UMC. Shall attend all meetings of the pastoral staff and the annual Church Conference of Otterbein UMC. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned which are appropriately aligned with this position.
Qualifications:
Vibrant, growing personal relationship with the Lord, Jesus Christ. A call and passion for children and youth ministry. Strong people, planning, communication, organizational and administrative skills. Spiritual gifts of leadership and teaching, with a proven track record of success in leading other leaders. Proactive self-starter, with the ability to multitask. A desire to build relationships with teens outside of Otterbein Church and encourage teens to witness to their friends within the community. Team player that commits fully to the vision of Otterbein United Methodist Church. Willingness to make a long-term commitment to the position.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor degree in Christian Education, Theology or Teaching is preferable, or evidence of effective youth ministry experience.
Computer Skills:
Word processing, Spreadsheets (Word, Excel preferred), and Social Networking (using Otterbein's Social Networking policy as a minimum standard)
Other Requirements:
Must submit and obtain Child Protection Background Clearances through the PA State Police and PA Department of Human Services (i.e., PA State Criminal History, PA Child Abuse History). Must also submit fingerprints for FBI clearance. Submission for clearances must be made within 30 days from date of hire. Clearances must be updated every 5 years. Safe Sanctuary training (provided by conference staff) will be completed within first 6 months of employment. Appropriate attire must be worn at all times for the event the Youth Ministries Director is participating in. I understand this job description and its requirements.
