Job Description
Peer Support Specialist Cherokee County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is seeking a Peer Support Specialist to provide recovery-focused support, outreach, and services to individuals with substance use disorders in the community. Required Before Interview Applicants must submit a personal recovery story prior to being considered for an interview. Please email your recovery story to: abyars@cherokeerecovery.com Applicants who do not meet the minimum recovery requirement or submit a recovery story will not be eligible for an interview. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Must have personal experience with a substance use disorder, have sought and participated in substance use treatment, and have maintained a minimum of 5 years in recovery. Must have a working knowledge and understanding of recovery organizations, self-help groups, and community-based recovery resources. Must be able to demonstrate personal experience with and understanding of the recovery process and use that experience appropriately to support others. Previous volunteer or work experience with a recovery organization, self-help group, or recovery community is preferred. Must have knowledge of substance use treatment, recovery resources, and community services. Must be self-motivated, dependable, organized, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to exercise good judgment. Trauma-informed training and/or experience is a plus. Key Responsibilities Provide peer support to individuals transitioning into and maintaining recovery. Complete assessments of individual strengths, needs, resources, and recovery goals. Develop and support individualized recovery plans. Provide individual, group, family, and crisis support within the scope of the position. Provide outreach and assist with screening and engagement for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) services. Provide recovery check-ins and ongoing support following treatment. Connect individuals and families with appropriate community resources. Use recovery-oriented practices, including motivational interviewing. Work collaboratively with treatment providers, community agencies, and other professionals. Maintain required documentation and attend required trainings. Follow all agency safety and emergency policies.
Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of the Treatment Director. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to walk, sit, communicate effectively, use standard office equipment, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
