July 2026 Founded in 1983, Freedom House is a dynamic and growing domestic and sexual violence agency headquartered in Princeton, IL, with satellite offices in Geneseo, Kewanee, Cambridge, and Lacon, and shelters located in both Princeton and Kewanee. The Child & Teen Counselor is primarily responsible for providing direct individual and group counseling services to children under the age of 18 who have been witness to, or victims of domestic violence. This position will also meet with parents/guardians of children who have been affected by domestic violence and assist them with tools to better help their children cope.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assess client needs and coordinate referrals to community resources and supportive services as appropriate
• Provide trauma-informed individual, group, family, and crisis counseling services to child and teen survivors of domestic violence
• Provide parenting support services to help rebuild and strengthen the parent-child relationship where it has been affected by domestic violence.
• Ensures case documentation is accurate, current, and reflects the services provided. Case files are reviewed quarterly to ensure compliance and quality.
• Collaborate with parents/guardians to address client needs and promote positive parenting practices
• Advocate for child clients and coordinate with hospitals, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system to support client safety and well-being
• Provide on-call hotline and shelter coverage, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Additional Responsibilities:

• Participate in community outreach activities, public education presentations, and stakeholder meetings to increase awareness of domestic violence services
• Attend required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities
• Travel locally and occasionally out of state to meet client and program needs
• Adhere to agency policies, confidentiality standards, and mandated reporting requirements
• Maintain professional working relationships with staff, community partners, and stakeholders
• Maintain organized agency records and workspaces
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor Qualification Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in social/human services (preferred) or at least one year experience in a social work setting
• Successful completion of a 60-hour Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault training through an Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Professional-approved site (provided upon hire)
• Excellent written, verbal, and counseling communication skills
• Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license and proof of insurance
• Proficiency with computer and software applications utilized by the agency
• Ability to work independently and effectively with agency staff and outside agencies
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and agency confidentiality
• Experience, ability, and willingness to communicate and work well with survivors from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds and with various religious beliefs, lifestyles, sexual orientations, age variance, and differing abilities
• Ability to pass a drug screen and background check

Pay:

$20.00 - $22.00 per hour
