Purpose of Position Provide counseling, crisis intervention, and skills-based training for youth with significant risk factors and, when possible, their families. Be a role model and provide assistance to ensure effective program operations. Essential Job Functions
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
Provide group, family and individual counseling to clients and skills-based training as scheduled and assigned. Counseling must be trauma informed and utilize youth empowerment and positive youth development strategies. Counseling approaches must follow evidence-based practice such trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused brief therapy, trust-based relational intervention, play therapy (or art or sand tray) and may also include use of evidence-based programs such as curriculum-based support group or Positive Action. Any approaches to be used that are not listed must have prior approval of the counselor's supervisor. Assist with scheduling guest speakers to provide information and guidance for youth in the program. Assist in coordinating youth's counseling services and progress in counseling with the overall plan of service and the youth's plan and progress in the daily milieu. Work directly with the facility's Residential Leadership to address disparities in the youth's progress in counseling vs. the milieu to ensure a unified approach to supporting the youth's growth. Participate in local Advisory Board Meetings, other intra agency meetings, and community events in each area served as applicable to the counselor's assigned program. Assist in securing community resources for the benefit of youth residing in the program; help link youth to available resources as needed. Actively participate in plans of service meetings, ARDs or other school meetings, program staff meetings, or other meetings that will ultimately benefit the program and youth served. Act cooperatively with all agency staff and clients. Complete the mental health portion of admission assessments/resident assessments (due at admission for Transitional Living youth and within 30 days for Emergency Services youth), the mental health/behavioral health portions of plans of service, weekly summary of client progress and/or weekly client goals, counseling progress notes, incident reports when involved in specific instances, and other case file documentation in a timely manner, as per program contract and/or policy and procedure and/or per residential child care licensing standards. Provide clinical recommendations as needed to Program Manager when a change in milieu approach or an emergency plan of service may be needed to maintain youth safety or overcome an obstacle in the youth's progress. Provide on-call crisis intervention as needed. Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by direct supervisor or designated by the Executive Director.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
As needed for the benefit of the youth's progress, communicate with community agencies and providers, program staff, probation officers, case workers, and/or family, etc. Communication must be coordinated with the Residential Leadership team to avoid duplication of effort and to ensure any conflicting messages are resolved before communicating with external sources. Relay any news learned from external sources that impacts the youth's current functioning or future plans with Residential Leadership. Assist with providing staff training as needed. Assist with facilitating client file audits or case staffing as requested by direct supervisor. Ensure that program billing and statistics are tracked and reported accurately and timely (for counselors providing billable services). Participate in recruiting and training student interns and maintaining contact with local universities; provide clinical supervision for student interns and/or provide learning opportunities appropriate for the student intern's level of education as needed. Assist the agency and direct supervisor in implementing, maintaining, and updating as needed the residential services policies and procedures, particularly policies and procedures specific to the program's operations and funding source expectations. Assist the program with providing counseling intervention for any crisis that occurs within the facility and with the residents. Act as the liaison between the agency's residential programs and the agency's counseling programs. Ensure runaway and homeless youth are provided crisis intervention services as appropriate to the counselor's assigned program; ensure each RHY youth residing in the facility receives individual and/or family counseling from the program as eligible and appropriate at the frequency required by the funding source. Working conditions
Salary:
Salary commensurate with formal preparation, experience and organization funding status.
Hours:
Exempt from federal wage and hour guidelines; position requires flexibility. Have a reliable form of transportation.
On-Call Duty:
Position requires carrying a cell phone to provide on-call services.
Office Base:
Determined at time of employment.
Supervision:
Assists with the supervision of student interns. Reports to the Treatment Director for direct supervision. Minimum qualifications Knowledge and attitude Knowledge of the state's TDFPS residential childcare licensing standards. Knowledge of counseling techniques for youth who have been exposed to significant risk factors, including youth separated from their families, youth who have run away or are homeless, and youth who have been abused or neglected and are part of the state foster care system. Must be able to accept supervision; program services; follow procedures; and accurately and efficiently update record keeping systems. Must be adaptable to change. Must be able to prepare clear, professional, and timely reports on program activities to inform management of program accomplishments, issues and problems. Must maintain confidentiality of private client information per funding source. Must ensure maintenance of an ethical and professional culture of care environment for the benefit of youth, community resources or referral sources, other program or agency personnel, and the agency as a whole. Education and experience Master's Degree in Social Sciences or related field. A license as a Licensed Professional Counselor or LCSW highly preferred; work toward professional licensure and status as an LPC Intern or LMSW required as a minimum. Experience working in a residential program preferred. Spanish speaking preferred. Experience in working with substance use populations preferred.
Pay:
$48,500.00 - $55,000.00 per year
