Starting at $85,000, negotiable based on experience and skillset About Us SGC Survey is a professional surveying firm with about 120 employees working across more than twenty states. We provide land, utility infrastructure, and geospatial surveying services to major energy and infrastructure clients. We are independently owned, and we are building our internal IT function from the ground up. About the Job This is our in-house IT seat: one person, broad scope, real authority. You will support about 120 people — office staff running CAD and GIS software, project managers and administrative staff, and survey crews working in the field every day across more than twenty states. We work with an outside managed service provider for 24/7 help desk, firewall and network management, monitoring, and backups. Your job is the SGC side of that relationship. You set the standards, direct the vendor, verify the work, and personally own the things that should not be outsourced — our survey and engineering software, our field technology, our ERP, and our client security obligations. There are no direct reports today. As the company grows, the first help desk hire will report to you, with a clear path to IT Manager. What You'll Do Own our Microsoft 365 and Entra ID environment: configuration standards, security policy, permissions, and license management. Manage the relationship with our managed service provider — service levels, escalations, service reviews, and reviewing their invoices and quotes against what we actually contracted for. Set network and site standards across our offices, and own our internet circuits and carrier contracts. Support the software our production teams depend on: Autodesk Civil 3D, MicroStation, Carlson, Trimble Business Center, Global Mapper, Esri GIS, and Bluebeam. Keep our field crews running — rugged laptops, tablets, data collectors, GNSS receivers, cellular devices, and hotspots. Own security policy, vulnerability management, client security questionnaires, and incident response. Serve as the IT lead for our ERP and project accounting system. Lead the IT side of office openings and moves, system migrations, and integrations. Build and manage the IT budget, and keep an accurate hardware, software, and license inventory. Be the person our people come to when something is not working. What We're Looking For Five or more years in IT, including responsibility for infrastructure, identity, and end-user support at a multi-site company. High-volume support experience is required. You have run IT somewhere busy, with steady onboarding and offboarding and users who cannot afford to wait. Hands-on Microsoft 365 and Entra ID administration, Windows endpoint management, and solid networking knowledge — firewalls, switching, and wireless. Comfortable being the only IT person in the building: setting your own priorities, directing vendors instead of waiting on them, and moving between a contract review and a stuck plotter without losing either. Able to read a quote, a statement of work, or a service agreement, and willing to push back on a vendor in writing. Clear communicator who can explain technology decisions to leaders and field crews without jargon. Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Able to travel to our other offices and to field locations roughly 10 to 20 percent of the time. Able to lift up to 50 pounds and do hands-on work such as running cable, setting up workstations, and working in equipment rooms. Nice to Have Experience managing a managed service provider from the client side, or running a transition between providers.
Merger and acquisition experience:
carve-outs, integrations, or Microsoft 365 tenant migrations. Background in surveying, engineering, construction, or another field services business. CAD, GIS, or geospatial application support. Certifications such as Microsoft, CompTIA Network+ or Security+, Fortinet, Cisco, or Meraki. Associate or bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field.
