Part Time Freight Conductor/Engineer

Job Description

Established railroad seeking reliable Locomotive Conductor or Engineer in Marion, IL. This position will operate diesel locomotives if an engineer, interpret train orders, train signals, radio communications and railroad rules and regulations to operate in an efficient and safe manner. Ability to undertake administrative tasks such as HOS and reporting.

The ideal candidate duties & responsibilities include but are not limited to:
For Engineer Candidates:
Communicate effectively with engineer/conductor or dispatcher by radio to give/receive information and instructions concerning stops, delays or oncoming trains. Inspects locomotives for operational readiness by making FRA and Company required checks and tests. Diagnosis minor malfunctions and performs minor maintenance and servicing activities when maintenance personnel are unavailable. Must comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to including wearing PPE, responding to safety concerns and judgement to take appropriate action. Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions; work in conditions that include loud noise and fumes; climb ladders and on/off & top of equipment. Able to handle medium to heavy work; ability to lift a minimum of 50 to 80 pounds to waist height.
For Conductor Candidates:
Interpret and follow train orders, signal indications, bulletins, and radio instructions to safely direct train movements. Communicate effectively with customer service, locomotive engineers, and other railroad employees via phone or radio regarding train movements, stops, delays, track conditions, and oncoming trains. Inspect locomotives and train cars as required to ensure operational readiness, proper securement, and compliance with safety standards. Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and company safety rules and policies, including wearing required PPE, reporting safety concerns, and using sound judgment to take appropriate action in the field. Perform work outdoors in all weather conditions, including activities requiring climbing ladders, walking long distances, and working around moving equipment. Perform medium to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying 50-80 pounds to waist height. Complete required administrative duties such as Hours-of-Service records, incident reports, and operational documentation. Direct and coordinate switching, coupling, and uncoupling of cars, applying and releasing handbrakes, and securing equipment as needed.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Certified Engineer / Certified Conductor (preferred) Willing to submit to a background and driving investigation Willing to submit to Pre-employment drug & alcohol testing. Working Conditions Outdoor work in all weather conditions. Regular exposure to loud noise, moving equipment, uneven terrain, and other rail-related hazards. Frequent climbing, bending, walking, and lifting. Variable work hours depending on operational needs; on-call availability may be required. This position is a regular part-time position with a range of 15-25 hours per week on average. Expected pay for this role is $20-$30 per hour. The successful candidate will have general availability to work 3-5 hours per shift on various days of the week, dependent on customer needs. $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
