Agency NC State Highway Patrol Division NC State Highway Patrol Job Classification Title Weigh Station Operator (S) Position Number 60086654 Grade NC07 About Us The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. State Troopers are committed to protecting North Carolina's motoring public. Description of Work The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is seeking a Weigh Station Operator (WSO). The Weigh Station Operator works under the supervision of a sworn member of the State Highway Patrol. The WSO is responsible for assisting in the daily activities that are performed at the troop weigh stations and mobile weigh stations during special operations such as Road WATCH or when the troop weigh station is non-operational. The WSO monitors trucks entering weigh stations for erratic driving, equipment safety detects, violations of size/weight laws including compliance with the vehicle registration requirements, international fuel tax agreement, international registration plan, state and local fuel tax laws, Commercial Driver's License compliance, and insurance requirements to meet federal and state laws. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Key Responsibilities Scales Operation Responsibility of using automated scales and Weigh In Motion (WIM) scales to determine weights of commercial motor vehicles and their cargo; utilizes measuring devices to calculate axle weight, axle grouping, height, license, and permit weight of those vehicles to detect violations. Utilizes State Bridge charts to check for weight violations and uses the FuelTaCS systems to issue civil penalties for over axle, axle grouping, registration, fuel tax, insurance, and permit violations. Weight Enforcement Check vehicles for compliance with or violations of the International Fuel Tax, International Registration Plan and issue temporary permits. Use of the reciprocity manual to determine tolerance and registration requirements for out of state vehicles; issue receipts for citations and permits. Monitors commercial motor vehicles for erratic driving and equipment violations. Administrative Duties Answer phones, take messages; maintain records and prepare reports on all vehicles checked, weighed, and accessed; properly identify types of violations for reporting purposes required by the State Highway Patrol and the Federal Highway Administration. Public Contact Responsibility to explain federal and local size and weight laws to the general public; contact out of state agencies for license, registration, and escort information; take written and oral complaints from the public about size and weight violations and performs Traffic Safety Information programs at the troop weigh station. Equipment Operation Responsible for the operation of computers, base radio, fax machine, telephone, office calculator, printer, copier and computerized static and Weigh In Motion (WIM) scales, credit card machine, IRD, NCPass system, Truck Counter and Radiation Portal and Associated equipment Please note: Job postings close at 11:59:59 p.m. the night before the listed Posting End Date above.

Recruitment Range:

$37,377-$47,815 Annually Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Position/Physical Requirements:

Typical work schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-5:00pm (requires rotating shift requirements). Must be able to successfully complete the Weigh Station Operator Basic School and Field Training Program within one year of hire. Must be willing to work in and around Commercial Motor Vehicles in order to perform inspections, as required by the State Highway Patrol and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
