Job Summary We are seeking a reliable, detail-oriented, and state-licensed Smog Check Inspector to join our team at our busy Test-Only station. In this role, your primary responsibility is to perform accurate vehicle emissions inspections in strict compliance with state regulatory standards. Because we are a Test-Only facility, there is absolutely no pressure to sell repairs or diagnostics—your sole focus is providing fast, honest, and exceptional customer service.
Conduct official smog check inspections on a variety of vehicles using state-mandated testing equipment (OIS and BAR-97 systems).
Visual & Functional Checks:
Perform thorough visual inspections of emission control components and execute functional tests (such as OBD-II system checks, fuel cap tests, and ignition timing checks).
Regulatory Compliance:
Strictly adhere to all Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) rules, regulations, and procedures to maintain the station's excellent compliance record.
Customer Service:
Greet customers warmly, explain the inspection process, accurately enter vehicle data into the system, and clearly explain test results (pass/fail status) without performing diagnostic or repair work.
Station Upkeep:
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Ensure testing equipment is calibrated and functioning properly, reporting any issues immediately.
Qualifications & Requirements Licensure:
Must possess a valid, current State Smog Check Inspector License issued by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR).
Performance Score:
Must maintain a current STAR Inspector Score above 0.5 and have a clean BAR record with no active citations.
Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years of experience performing smog inspections is preferred, but newly licensed inspectors who meet the score requirement are welcome to apply.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency operating BAR-97 EIS and BAR-OIS testing platforms. Basic computer skills for data entry.
Attributes:
High level of integrity, strong attention to detail, punctuality, and excellent communication skills.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Screening:
Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and be able to pass a background check.
