In this capacity, you will take charge of field assessments for various transportation structures and bridges. Your primary focus will involve guiding inspection crews, assessing structural integrity, pinpointing maintenance needs, and generating precise technical documentation while ensuring full compliance with NBIS, FHWA, and DOT standards. Core Responsibilities Direct bridge inspection crews during comprehensive, routine, and specialized structural assessments. Conduct thorough evaluations of diverse bridge structures, including those made of concrete and steel. Examine critical components such as foundations, girders, bearings, beams, and bridge decks to help maintain a safe and functional infrastructure for the public. Detect signs of structural damage, cracking, corrosion, and other forms of deterioration. Manage and organize daily field operations for all members of the inspection team. Guarantee that every inspection adheres strictly to NJDOT, FHWA, NBIS, and other relevant transportation protocols. Analyze existing engineering drawings, bridge plans, and historical inspection documentation. Record site conditions using detailed notes, sketches, measurements, and photographic evidence to support accurate data collection. Assign and record condition ratings for various bridge elements to help prioritize necessary maintenance efforts. Draft and perform quality reviews of comprehensive bridge condition assessment reports. Suggest necessary repairs, maintenance actions, or further evaluations whenever deficiencies are noted. Collaborate effectively with contractors, project managers, engineers, clients, and relevant transportation authorities. Ensure all inspection records are complete, precise, and delivered according to project timelines. Maintain a secure working environment by strictly following all field safety, fall protection, confined-space, and traffic control procedures. Operate specialized bridge-access equipment, including snooper trucks, scaffolding, ladders, and lifts as necessary. Travel to various inspection sites and project locations as required by the workload. Required Qualifications Demonstrated expertise in conducting structural and bridge inspections. Prior experience serving as a Team Leader for bridge inspections is highly desirable. Comprehensive understanding of FHWA and NBIS bridge inspection standards. Proven track record of success on transportation infrastructure projects managed by DOT agencies. Direct experience evaluating concrete and steel bridge structures. Capability to identify structural degradation and provide precise evaluations of bridge conditions to ensure long-term safety. Deep familiarity with structural systems and the various components that make up a bridge. Proficiency in interpreting technical specifications, bridge plans, and engineering drawings. Experience in the creation and critical review of detailed inspection reports. Strong leadership abilities to effectively coordinate and guide field teams. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to communicate clearly through technical writing. Physical capability to perform duties outdoors, at significant heights, and in diverse environmental conditions. Possession of a valid driver's license. NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges certification is strongly preferred or required depending on specific project needs. Prior experience with NJDOT bridge inspection protocols is highly valued. Educational Background A Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred. Candidates may be considered if they possess an equivalent mix of relevant field experience, certifications, and education. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred where applicable.
