This mission Is accomplished by enforcing the state's Criminal Code, the Motor Transportation Act, the Motor Vehicle Code, and additional federal/state commercial motor vehicle safety regulations as adopted In New Mexico Administrative Code.

Officers and Transportation Inspectors conduct commercial vehicle inspections at fixed or roadside locations. Why does the job exist? The job exists to ensure safe and legal Commercial Motor Vehicle Operations through inspections and enforcement also, to detect driver safety, weight, and oversize violations on commercial motor vehicles to ensure compliance with applicable, New Mexico State and Federal laws. How does it get done? Transportation Inspectors conduct safety Inspections on commercial motor vehicles. During these inspections a Transportation Inspector can Identify If a commercial motor vehicle is in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations. Transportation Inspectors have the authority to place a commercial motor vehicle and their drivers out of service for serious violation. This is performed by conducting comprehensive inspections on vehicles using observations, various tools, and specialized equipment after passing North American Standard Part A and B, North American Standard General HAZMAT, and North American Standard Cargo Tank. Who are the customers? The customers are Department of Public Safety, Department of Transportation and the general public of the state of New Mexico. Ideal Candidate The customers are Department of Public Safety, Department of Transportation and the general public of the state of New Mexico. Minimum Qualification High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience driving, and/or maintaining, and/or performing routine inspections on automotive and/or heavy equipment, to include tractor-trailers, gas and/or diesel engines with air brakes and hydraulic systems. Must possess a valid driver's license. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Department of Transportation ONLY:

In addition to the above, must possess or obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire. Employment Requirements Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy. In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire. Working Conditions Work Is performed in an office and field setting with significant sitting, lifting, dragging, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, crawling, and driving different types of vehicles. Work may often have extensive personal computer and phone usage, as well as being exposed to stressful situations, loud noises, and uncooperative subjects where maintaining an appropriate manner is expected.
