Full Job Description After School Teacher & Van Driver Position:
After School Teacher & Van Driver Schedule:
Monday - Friday 12:45pm-6:00pm Position Summary The After School Teacher & Van Driver is responsible for providing a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for school-age children enrolled in After School at Northgate. This position combines classroom responsibilities with transportation duties, including safely transporting children from local elementary schools to Northgate. The ideal candidate is dependable, energetic, safety-conscious, and enjoys working with school-age children. This position requires strong communication skills, good judgment, and the ability to maintain a positive and professional environment. Essential ResponsibilitiesAfter School Program Provide active supervision of children at all times. Maintain appropriate teacher-to-child ratios and follow Northgate supervision and zoning procedures. Create a welcoming, positive, and inclusive environment for all children. Engage children in age-appropriate activities, games, crafts, outdoor play, homework support, and enrichment activities. Assist children with homework and school-related needs when appropriate. Support children's social-emotional development and use positive discipline strategies. Follow Northgate's Positive Discipline Policy and never use corporal punishment or inappropriate disciplinary practices. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom and play environment. Assist with snack preparation and clean-up. Complete required attendance and classroom documentation. Communicate professionally with families through Brightwheel and in person. Follow all Northgate policies and procedures. Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development as required. Assist with opening, closing, and daily classroom responsibilities as assigned. Work collaboratively with other teachers and members of the administrative team. Van Driver Responsibilities Safely transport children between Northgate and designated local elementary schools. Follow the assigned transportation schedule and designated routes. Complete required vehicle and safety checks before operating the van. Ensure all children are properly seated and secured according to safety requirements. Maintain accurate transportation attendance and headcounts. Complete required vehicle and transportation documentation. Conduct thorough headcounts before leaving each location and upon arrival. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle. Follow all traffic laws and Northgate transportation procedures. Maintain a calm, professional, and safe environment while transporting children. Communicate immediately with administration regarding delays, transportation concerns, accidents, or other emergencies. Keep the Northgate van clean and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly. Follow emergency procedures and licensing requirements related to transportation. Child Safety & Supervision The safety and well-being of children is the highest priority of this position.
The employee is expected to:
Maintain active supervision at all times. Know the location and status of every child in their care. Follow all emergency preparedness and evacuation procedures. Report injuries, incidents, safety concerns, or suspected violations of policy immediately to administration. Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff. Follow all applicable California childcare licensing requirements and Northgate policies. Qualifications Experience working with school-age children preferred. Previous childcare, preschool, after-school, camp, education, or youth-program experience preferred. Must be dependable, punctual, and responsible. Must demonstrate strong communication and teamwork skills. Must be able to manage a group of children in an active environment. Must be able to remain calm and make appropriate decisions during unexpected situations. Must meet all applicable California childcare employment and licensing requirements. Must meet all requirements to legally operate a Northgate vehicle and transport children, as applicable. Must maintain required certifications and documentation, including CPR/First Aid if required for the position. Physical Requirements Ability to safely supervise and interact with children throughout the workday. Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and move throughout the classroom and playground. Ability to participate in active play and outdoor activities. Ability to assist children when necessary. Ability to safely enter and exit the Northgate van and assist with child loading and unloading. Ability to lift or carry items required for daily program operations. Professional Expectations All Northgate employees are expected to: Arrive on time and be ready to work at the scheduled start time. Dress appropriately and professionally for working with children. Use professional and respectful communication with children, families, and coworkers. Keep personal cell phone use to a minimum while working. Follow Northgate's attendance, supervision, safety, and communication policies. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with children and families. Work as a team and support the overall success of the program. Represent Northgate Discovery Preschool and After School at Northgate in a positive and professional manner.
