Job Summary Join our team as a School Van Driver and become a vital part of ensuring safe, reliable transportation for students. In this energetic role, you will operate school vans and specialized vehicles to transport children to and from school, extracurricular activities, and special events. Duties Safely operate school vans and transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations. Ensure the safety of all passengers by following defensive driving techniques and emergency response procedures for transportation. Assist students with disabilities or mobility challenges by providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring proper securement within the vehicle. Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle condition, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and emergency equipment. Maintain clear communication with school staff, parents, and students to coordinate pick-up/drop-off schedules and address any concerns promptly. Respond quickly to traffic changes or road hazards by adjusting routes as needed while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor. Adhere to school policies on student discipline, behavior management, and conduct during transit. Complete accurate logs of trips, mileage, incidents, and vehicle maintenance reports daily. Follow all state and local commercial driving laws as well as transportation safety regulations to ensure compliance at all times. Experience Prior work with children or in childcare settings demonstrates strong behavior management skills and patience. Valid driver's license appropriate for operating school vans or paratransit vehicles; Ohio Pre-Service Van Certificate is required. Knowledge of child safety protocols, student discipline procedures, and emergency response techniques including CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and first aid certification. Familiarity with wheelchair securement systems and assistance techniques for passengers with mobility needs. Excellent communication skills in English for effective interaction with students, parents, staff, and emergency responders. Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for loading/unloading equipment or assisting passengers safely. Strong understanding of traffic laws, vehicle codes, driving regulations for school policy compliance, and safe driving practices such as defensive driving and quick response to traffic changes.
