Job Description
Overview Read this part first This is not a desk job. You will spend roughly half your day on a computer buying material and chasing vendors, and the other half on your feet — unloading trucks, running a forklift, tagging and pulling material, packing parts, and routing parts. We are a 25-person precision metal fabrication shop building parts for Aerospace, Department of Energy, and Cleanroom companies around the world. If you want to sit in a quiet office and process purchase orders all day, you will not be happy here. If you like moving, solving problems, and owning something end to end, keep reading. What you'll actually be doing Purchasing — about 40% of your time Quote and buy raw material: steel, stainless, aluminum plate, bar, tube, sheet, and hardware Buy outside processing: anodize, plating, powder coat, heat treat, NDT, machining, laser Buy consumables and tooling: weld wire, shielding gas, abrasives, end mills, drills, PPE Write and issue POs in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Chase vendors daily on late orders — expediting is a real part of this job, not an exception Push back on vendor pricing and lead times instead of accepting the first answer Hold vendors accountable to what they promised, in writing Receiving & material control — about 25% Unload trucks, verify material against the PO and packing slip, catch shortages and wrong material before it hits the floor Pull, file, and match mill certs and material certifications — our customers audit this, so it has to be right every time Tag, label, and stage material so the shop can find it without asking you Manage remnants and drops so we stop rebuying material we already own Cycle counts on hardware and consumables; keep the shop from running out of gas and wire mid-job Shipping & logistics — about 25% Quote and book LTL freight, small parcel, and hot-shot deliveries; write BOLs and packing lists Run parts to and from local finishers, platers, and customers in the company truck Wherever else we need you — about 10% Help on the floor when the schedule is tight: deburr, kit jobs, assist assembly, help with packaging Keep the receiving dock, shipping area, and material racks clean and organized Whatever else a small shop needs on a given day What you have to bring Hard requirements: Valid NM driver's license with a clean record — you'll be driving our truck regularly Forklift experience (we'll certify you if you're not currently certified) Able to read a shop drawing well enough to identify material type, grade, thickness, and quantity Comfortable with a tape measure and basic calipers Able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and be on your feet for a good part of the day Solid enough on a computer to work in QuickBooks, Excel, email, and Smartsheet without hand-holding Willing to be told no, and willing to tell a vendor no What makes you a strong candidate: Shop, warehouse, welding, machining, construction, or industrial background — you know what metal is and how it behaves Have bought material or outside services before, in any industry Know metal grades and callouts: 304 vs 316, 6061 vs 5052, A36, and why the difference matters Experience with government or defense paperwork: mill certs, domestic melt, DFARS, first article documentation Freight and crating experience What we care about more than your resume: Honesty. Hard work. Consistency. Compassion. Respect. We hire on attitude and train the skill. Someone with a shop background and a good head who's never written a PO will beat a career buyer who won't leave the office
