Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides executive leadership and operational oversight for a broad portfolio of ancillary and support services at Oaklawn Hospital. The COO is responsible for ensuring operational excellence, regulatory compliance, fiscal stewardship, and strategic alignment across assigned departments. The COO leads directors and managers, evaluates existing services on an ongoing basis, and develops new programs as organizational and community needs emerge. The COO communicates program performance, risks, and accomplishments to the CEO and, as appropriate, to the Board of Directors.
Essential Functions:
The COO consistently demonstrates an outward mindset, accountability, and professionalism while achieving organizational goals in a manner that enables others to succeed. Leadership & Operations Provides executive oversight for designated operations, facilities, and organizational policies. Assumes responsibility for directing and coordinating organizational activities in the absence of the CEO. Serves as an active member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to system-wide decision-making. Leads, coaches, and supports directors and managers to ensure high performance, engagement, and accountability. Oversees the development, administration, and performance of operating budgets for departments within scope. Ensures adherence to all Oaklawn administrative, personnel, safety, and corporate compliance policies and procedures. Models ethical conduct and compliance with all regulatory and organizational standards. Promotes effective communication, leadership, and advocacy in support of Oaklawn's mission, vision, and strategic goals. Strategy & Organizational Performance Collaborates with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team in the development and execution of organizational strategy. Recommends and oversees capital improvements and operational initiatives aligned with strategic priorities. Participates in organizational planning, program development, staffing strategies, and operational execution. Develops, implements, and manages program components of the annual budget in partnership with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and CEO. Oversees operational financial performance in collaboration with the CFO, including budgets, productivity metrics, and internal controls to ensure efficiency and goal attainment. Ensures Oaklawn Hospital's operations comply with all applicable federal, state, local, accreditation, certification, licensing, and funding requirements. Participates in environmental assessment, trend forecasting, policy development, resource management, program innovation, and leadership development across assigned service areas.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Communication Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership, physicians, staff, board members, and external stakeholders. Organizational & Healthcare Acumen Strong understanding of complex healthcare organizational dynamics and matrixed leadership environments. Working knowledge of healthcare operations, medical staff engagement, performance improvement, and regulatory requirements. Comprehensive experience and oversight of Electronic Health Records (EHR). Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines effectively. Problem Solving & Leadership Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems, exercise sound judgment, and make timely decisions. Skilled in conflict resolution, change management, and continuous improvement. Leadership style that balances decisiveness with collaboration and consensus-building. Teamwork & Relationships Strong collaborative and team-building skills. Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive working relationships across all levels of the organization and with external partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree (MBA, MHA, or similar advanced degree) strongly preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ten (10) years of progressive professional experience. Five (5) years of senior leadership experience supervising experienced staff across multiple programs, departments, or service lines.
Working Conditions:
Primarily sedentary office environment. May be required to work in clinical or operational areas where exposure to stressful situations, body fluids, or infectious diseases is possible.
