Job Summary The Emergency Dispatcher plays a critical role in ensuring public safety by efficiently managing emergency calls and coordinating responses from law enforcement, medical, and fire services. This position requires quick thinking, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. The ideal candidate will be responsible for receiving emergency calls, assessing the situation, and dispatching appropriate resources while maintaining accurate records. Duties Receive and prioritize emergency calls from the public and assess the nature of the emergencies. Utilize GPS technology to determine the location of incidents and dispatch appropriate response teams. Transcribe information accurately during calls to ensure clarity in communication with responders. Communicate effectively with callers to gather necessary details while providing reassurance. Operate phone systems and data entry software to log incidents and maintain accurate records. Negotiate with callers when necessary to de-escalate situations or gather more information. Familiarize oneself with medical terminology to assist in emergencies requiring medical response. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies and other emergency services to coordinate responses. Skills Proficient in GPS technology for locating incidents quickly. Strong data entry skills for maintaining accurate records of calls and responses. Excellent phone etiquette to ensure professionalism during high-stress situations. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for clear interaction with callers and responders. Ability to transcribe information accurately while managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Knowledge of medical terminology is advantageous for understanding emergencies requiring medical assistance. Negotiation skills to effectively manage caller interactions and gather essential information. Familiarity with law enforcement procedures is a plus for coordinating responses efficiently. This role is essential for maintaining community safety and requires individuals who can perform under pressure while demonstrating a commitment to service excellence.
