General supervision is received from the Transportation Director, with a some leeway allowed for implementing and carrying out established policies of the transportation program. Supervision is exercised over 60+ school bus drivers. Student enrollment in the district totals over 3,500 students. This is a competitive position. The successful candidate will be appointed to the position provisionally and will need to take, pass, and be reachable on a New York State Civil Service Exam.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in scheduling all school bus runs; calls substitute drivers as needed, and sees that all buses are dispatched. Assists in handling routing and bus stop problems, complaints, and new children within the district. Confers with parents and principals on behavior problems. Handles the recording and submission of drivers' time cards and their payroll. Checks periodically all buses for compliance with safety laws. Assists in the orientation and training of new bus drivers. Reevaluates driving habits of veteran bus drivers. Assists the School Transportation Director in a variety of areas where assigned. May drive a school bus when required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of standard transportation methods and programs as related to school districts. Good knowledge of current New York State Motor Vehicle Laws and State Education rules and regulations as applied to the operation of school buses. Good knowledge of standard safety practices as applicable to school transportation programs. Good knowledge of computer systems such as email, word processing, routing software and other related systems pertaining to transportation. Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships between drivers, parents, principals, and children. Ability to evaluate personnel. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to make oral and written reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of full-time experience or its part-time equivalent in school transportation or a related field such as commercial bus or truck transportation, either as a driver or having responsibility for scheduling and/or routing drivers.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, is required for the type of vehicle being operated.
