GENERAL PURPOSE
Through the timely comprehension and application of the District's Emergency Dispatcher training curriculum, the successful candidate will gain the knowledge and experience necessary to effectively perform the job duties of the position of Emergency Dispatcher.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Training Specialist and Shift Supervisors.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Attend and participate in all courses and on-the-job training provided by the District to learn and perform the essential functions of an Emergency Dispatcher. Attend and successfully complete all required courses and obtain dispatcher certifications required for the position of Emergency Dispatcher I. Learn and follow District policies, procedures, guidelines, and instructions. Utilizes appropriate interpersonal skills in communicating and interacting with the public, trainers, co- workers, supervisors and managers, and others in the performance of the job duties. Maintain confidentiality with information obtained through employment with the District. Perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a United States Citizen Must be at least 18 years of age Must obtain and maintain certifications for Peace Officer Standards and Training Dispatcher, Emergency Medical Dispatcher, UCJIS User, CPR and other certifications the District deems necessary for the position. POST Certification must be obtained within six months of hire date. Typing at 40 WPM net.
COMPENTENCIES
Knowledge:
General knowledge of public safety and the role of an emergency dispatcher, and of basic office procedures.
Skills:
Must have excellent problem-solving skills and possess the appropriate level of technical aptitude to operate all equipment used in the job.
Abilities:
Ability to successfully complete a District approved training program. Must be able to actively listen to multiple inputs, properly analyze information, and act accordingly; follow verbal and written instructions; and establish and maintain effective working relationships in the workplace.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a 40 hour per week, probationary position that requires irregular work hours and schedules, including daytime and nighttime hours, weekends, and holidays. Adjustment of work hours, adjustment or cancellation of breaks or time off, and working overtime may be required on short notice.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Use of communications and computer equipment including radio equipment, headsets, consoles, telephone systems including 911 specific features, paging systems, logging recorder, TDD/TDY device, FAX, computers, printers, copy machine, computer hardware, and general and industry-specific computer programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit or stand for extended periods of time, reach with arms and use hands and fingers to handle equipment and controls, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision, hearing and speech abilities required by this job include:
  • Ability to see fine detail and adjust focus.
  • Ability to clearly hear phone and radio traffic of varying volume levels through use of a headset.
  • Ability to speak in a clear, concise, and timely manner.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job normally operates indoors in a professional office environment. Outdoor operations may be required for special events or in emergency situations. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
