  • 25 per hour (DOE) Position Summary The Diocese of San Diego is seeking a reliable, service-oriented Facilities Assistant / Day Porter to help maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environment for parishioners, students, visitors, and staff.
This position combines traditional day porter responsibilities with hands-on facility maintenance support. The ideal candidate takes pride in keeping facilities clean and organized while also assisting with minor repairs and preventative maintenance projects. This role is an excellent opportunity for an individual with basic maintenance experience or someone interested in learning and developing facility maintenance skills under the guidance of the Facility Supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Facility Cleaning & Day Porter Services Perform routine cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing, and maintaining high-touch surfaces. Monitor and maintain restrooms, ensuring cleanliness and adequate supplies throughout the day. Empty trash receptacles and replace liners in offices, meeting rooms, common areas, and Pastoral Center facilities. Conduct routine inspections and daily rounds of buildings and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance. Maintain entrances, walkways, hallways, gathering spaces, and outdoor areas in a clean and welcoming condition. Support the parish recycling and waste management programs. Requisition and restock cleaning supplies as needed. Facilities Operations & Event Support Set up and break down tables, chairs, equipment, and other furnishings for parish, school, and community events. Assist with room configurations for meetings, training sessions, religious education programs, banquets, and special events. Help move furniture, classroom equipment, supplies, and office materials as needed. Ensure meeting rooms and common areas remain orderly before, during, and after events. Support employee hospitality stations and vending areas as assigned. Maintenance Support Respond promptly to facility service requests and routine maintenance needs. Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, replacing hardware, touching up paint, assembling furniture, and making minor repairs. Assist with drywall patching, painting, carpentry projects, and preventative maintenance activities. Support minor plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets, clearing simple drain clogs, and repairing fixtures under supervision. Assist with basic electrical maintenance such as replacing switches, outlets, bulbs, and fixtures when appropriate. Help maintain tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies. Identify facility issues early and report repair needs before they become major problems. Safety & Security Monitor facilities for safety concerns and promptly report hazards. Assist with securing buildings, locking doors, and checking facilities at the end of scheduled activities. Ensure walkways, entrances, and common areas remain safe and accessible. Follow all safety procedures, cleaning standards, and applicable regulations. Utilize personal protective equipment and maintenance equipment safely and responsibly.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent. Valid California driver's license, insurable driving record, and reliable transportation. Ability to perform custodial and light maintenance duties. Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Excellent customer service and communication skills. Preferred Requirements Previous experience as a day porter, custodian, facilities assistant, maintenance worker, handyman, or similar position. Basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, facility operations, and workplace safety practices. Experience with painting, carpentry, drywall repair, plumbing, electrical work, or general building maintenance. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong commitment to customer service and hospitality. Ability to identify facility needs and proactively address issues. Basic knowledge of cleaning equipment, hand tools, and power tools. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff, contractors, and visitors. Sound judgment, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail. Ability to work safely in an office environment. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to perform moderate to heavy manual labor including frequent bending, walking and lifting up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the pastoral center, as well as maneuver throughout the facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events.
