Job Title:
Safety & Facilities Coordinator Reports to:
Human Resources Director Job Purpose:
The Safety & Facilities Coordinator is responsible for protecting the safety and well-being of patients, visitors, employees, and agency property by maintaining a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment across all Siouxland Mental Health Center locations. This position serves as the organization's primary resource for managing disruptive, aggressive, or potentially violent situations through crisis intervention, de-escalation, emergency response, employee support, and proactive safety initiatives. The Coordinator also leads emergency preparedness, safety compliance, security systems, and facility safety efforts to reduce organizational risk and promote a culture of safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Exercise the authority to intervene in situations that present an immediate threat to the safety or security of patients, visitors, employees, or agency property, taking appropriate action to stabilize the situation and notify leadership as necessary. Monitor, manage, and respond to disruptive, aggressive, threatening, or unsafe behaviors utilizing crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques while coordinating with law enforcement or emergency responders when necessary. Conduct routine security rounds of all facilities to identify safety hazards, security concerns, maintenance issues, and regulatory compliance needs, ensuring timely corrective action. Investigate safety incidents, workplace accidents, security concerns, and critical events; complete thorough documentation; identify trends; and recommend corrective actions to reduce organizational risk. Lead the agency's Safety Committee by developing agendas, facilitating meetings, maintaining meeting minutes, monitoring follow-up activities, and promoting a culture of workplace safety. Plan, coordinate, conduct, document, and evaluate all required emergency preparedness drills, exercises, and testing activities in accordance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements. Assist clinical staff during behavioral health crises by providing support, maintaining scene safety, and helping implement appropriate de-escalation and emergency response procedures. Coordinate safety orientation and ongoing employee education related to emergency procedures, workplace violence prevention, panic button systems, security systems, evacuation procedures, and other required safety protocols. Monitor organizational safety and critical incidents; prepare routine reports for Leadership Team review; present an annual safety report to the Board of Directors; and recommend quality improvement initiatives based on identified trends. Serve as the primary liaison with security, fire protection, alarm, and other safety vendors to ensure security systems, surveillance cameras, alarm systems, access control systems, and life safety equipment remain fully operational. Oversee agency emergency preparedness documentation, including evacuation plans, emergency response procedures, safety manuals, drill documentation, and required regulatory records. Coordinate routine inspections, testing, maintenance, and regulatory compliance for fire alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, carbon monoxide detectors, elevators, security systems, and other life safety equipment. Coordinate maintenance, inspections, and repairs for agency-owned vehicles and other assigned equipment. Maintain all safety documentation, drill reports, inspection records, and emergency preparedness documentation within facility Safety Books, the agency shared drive (

), and other required regulatory locations. Coordinate and conduct both scheduled and unannounced emergency preparedness drills and exercises in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Review, update, and distribute agency emergency preparedness plans and evacuation maps annually, ensuring current plans are posted throughout all facilities and public areas. Oversee facility safety and maintenance by coordinating preventive maintenance, contractor services, grounds maintenance, snow and ice removal, sidewalks, parking lots, landscaping, irrigation systems, elevators, life safety equipment, and building repairs to ensure a safe environment for employees and patients. Maintain continual survey readiness by ensuring all safety-related documentation, inspections, emergency preparedness activities, and regulatory requirements remain current and compliant with CARF, CCBHC, OSHA, Iowa HHS, CMS, and other applicable standards. Perform other duties as assigned.

Crisis Intervention & De-escalation - Demonstrates the ability to effectively assess, manage, and de-escalate disruptive, aggressive, or potentially violent situations while maintaining professionalism and ensuring the safety of all individuals.
Experience and Education:
Required:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Behavioral Health, or a related field preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, corrections, military service, behavioral health, hospital security, emergency medical services, or another public safety-related field. Demonstrated experience managing disruptive, aggressive, or potentially violent individuals using crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience, including leading committees, projects, or safety initiatives. Training or certification in crisis intervention, de-escalation, defensive tactics, or workplace violence prevention (e.g., CPI, MANDT, CIT, Verbal Judo, or equivalent). Experience conducting safety training, emergency preparedness drills, or employee education programs. Knowledge of emergency preparedness, incident command principles, and emergency response planning. Experience investigating incidents, preparing reports, and identifying opportunities for risk reduction and process improvement. Experience working with individuals experiencing serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or behavioral health crises.
Pay:
From $60,000.00 per year
