Role:
The Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Directorate (CSAID) at Fermilab invites applications for the USCMS Tier 1 Facility Manager. The position will be hired as an Application Physicist II with general characteristics listed below. TheU.S. CMS
facility is hosted by CSAID at Fermilab to provide computing resources and infrastructure services for theU.S. CMS
collaboration to achieve their physics goals and provide contributions to the world-wide distributed computing infrastructure of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. The selected candidate will organize the provisioning and operation of computing resources and infrastructure services as directed by theU.S. CMS
Software & Computing Operations Program through CSAID and will receive funds fromU.S. CMS
Software & Computing Operations Program for effort and computing hardware. The selected candidate will be a member of CSAID and work through the management structure of CSAID to organize hardware purchases, and coordinate hardware maintenance and service deployment and operation. The successful candidate will receive guidance from theU.S. CMS
Software & Computing Operations Program about the required performance and reliability of the deployed hardware, and which services are needed and at what performance to support theU.S. CMS
community and the CMS experiment at large. The selected candidate will be responsible for the availability and reliability of the facility as monitored by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). What your day-to-day as the USCMS Tier 1 Facility Manager at Fermilab will look like:U.S. CMS
Facility Operation:
coordinating the operation of theU.S. CMS
Facility at Fermilab through the CSAID management and operations hierarchy. The selected candidate will organize the provisioning and operation of computing resources and infrastructure services as directed by theU.S. CMS
Software & Computing Operations Program. They will be responsible for the availability and reliability of the facility as monitored by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).U.S. CMS
Facility provisioning: organizing the deployment of computing resources as requested by theU.S. CMS
Software and Computing Operations Program in coordination withCSAID. U.S. CMS
Facility Budget planning: planning the hardware purchases for the next 2-3 years with guidance from theU.S. CMS
Software & Computing Operations Program and the needed effort to operate hardware and services at Fermilab embedded in the CSAID management and operations structure. Job assignments may include isolating and defining problems, producing effective solutions and evaluating results. Sets up and monitors tests and contributes to the operation of facilities ensuring efficient functioning and conformance with safety specifications and regulations. May be responsible for the operation of a technical system such as a beam line, accelerator system, a detector or experimental system including computational systems. Providing technical advice to Technicians and other scientific professionals regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments. Using advanced application of modeling and simulation tools. Preparing technical reports and papers on research and development activities. May participate on Laboratory reviews and Safety Committees. Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor. Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position. Skills and Attributes forSuccess:
PhD in physics or related technical discipline and 6+ years of post-doctoral experience.Work Arrangement:
