Founded in 1680, St. Philip's is the oldest congregation in the United States south of Virginia and is part of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina within the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). The Assistant Sexton is a hands-on, service-oriented member of the Facilities team, reporting to the Director of Operations and working closely with the Church Sexton and other staff. This position helps ensure that the church's facilities are clean, orderly, safe, welcoming, and properly prepared for worship, ministry, and special events. The ideal candidate is dependable, attentive to detail, comfortable working independently, and committed to serving the church and its congregation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Building and Grounds Maintain the cleanliness, appearance, and general order of church buildings, classrooms, restrooms, and common areas. Assist with routine setup, breakdown, and resetting of spaces for worship services, classes, meetings, and special events. Monitor buildings and grounds for maintenance, safety, or security concerns and report issues promptly. Assist with basic maintenance tasks and coordinate with the Sexton or outside vendors as needed. Assist with receiving deliveries, moving supplies, and other physical tasks related to church operations. Worship and Ministry Support Provide facilities support for Sunday worship, including morning setup and post-service responsibilities. Provide facilities support for Wednesday evening worship, programs, and activities. Help ensure that facilities are welcoming and ready for members, visitors, and ministry participants. Events and Special Activities Assist with setup and breakdown for weddings, funerals, receptions, parish gatherings, and other special events as assigned. Arrange tables, chairs, equipment, and other furnishings according to event needs. Monitor facilities during events and respond to reasonable facilities-related needs. Help return spaces to their normal condition following events. General Work collaboratively with the Church Sexton, Director of Operations, Director of Finance and Facilities, clergy, staff, and volunteers. Maintain organized supplies and notify the Sexton of items that need to be replenished. Follow established procedures for building access, security, safety, and emergency situations. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the ministry and operations of St. Philip's Church.WORKING HOURS
This is a full-time position with a schedule that includes regular Sunday morning and Wednesday evening availability , as well as additional weekday hours as assigned. Because the role supports worship and ministry activities, flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events is expected.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent. A valid state-issued driver's license. Reliable personal transportation. Dependable, responsible, and able to work independently. Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining clean, orderly, and welcoming spaces. Ability to perform physical tasks associated with facilities work, including lifting, carrying, standing, walking, and moving furniture and equipment. Basic ability to use common hand tools and willingness to learn routine maintenance tasks. Strong communication skills and a cooperative, service-oriented approach. Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to unexpected facilities needs. Comfortable working in a church setting and willing to respectfully support the character, practices, worship services, and ministry activities of the congregation. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders and work at elevated heights. Ability to stand, kneel, crawl, and perform physical maintenance work. Ability to work in extreme hot and cold conditions.BENEFITS
