Department BHSU-Facility Services Physical Location of Position (City) Spearfish Posting Text Black Hills State University invites qualified, self-motivated candidates to apply for the position of Assistant Director, Facilities Planning and Management within the Facilities Services Department. The Assistant Director of Facilities Planning and Management provides leadership and oversight for campus facilities operations, maintenance, planning, sustainability, and capital projects. This position supports the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services in ensuring that university facilities are safe, efficient, sustainable, and aligned with institutional priorities. The Assistant Director plays a key role in strategic planning, project management, budgeting, and supervision of facilities staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of new construction, renovation, and maintenance projects. Provide direct supervision and leadership to a team of 28 custodians, ensuring efficient and effective cleaning operations across campus facilities. Support daily operations of Facilities Services, including building maintenance and grounds operations. Oversee project budgets, schedules, and contractor performance to ensure compliance with university standards, codes, and regulations. Develop and monitor preventive maintenance programs and operational procedures to maximize efficiency and extend facility life cycles. Collaborate with campus departments and external partners to support space planning, sustainability, and accessibility initiatives. Supervise and mentor assigned staff, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth. Assist in long-range facilities planning, including capital improvement projects and deferred maintenance strategies. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, building codes, and institutional policies. Manage space utilization and reporting, maintaining accurate building data and preparing required Board of Regents reports. Lead sustainability programming and events such as Earth Day, Tree Campus USA, and Go Green Pledge Month. Submit daily NOAA weather data and oversee campus alerts through the Everbridge notification system. Support emergency planning, preparedness, and continuity operations for the university. Assist with annual budget development and monitor departmental budgets to ensure efficient use of resources. Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing budgets. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Knowledge of facilities planning, safety practices, and sustainability principles in a higher education or similar environment. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, business administration, environmental science, architecture, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in facilities operations, construction management, or related areas. Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.
Preferred:
Master's degree in a related field. Experience in higher education or government facilities management. Familiarity with project management software and facilities management systems. Professional certification such as PE, PMP, or Certified Facility Manager (CFM). Background in budget oversight, energy management, or capital project planning.
COMMENTS
This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Services. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm, with occasional irregular hours, travel, or weekend work as needed. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
