At Cheekwood, the Facilities and Maintenance Department is dedicated to preserving the functionality, safety, and beauty of the property. Their core mission is to ensure an exceptional environment for visitors by maintaining the pristine condition of the gardens, facilities, and structures throughout the grounds. The team is responsible for a wide range of essential tasks, including routine maintenance, event setup, and repair work, all aimed at keeping the property in optimal condition. They consistently monitor the grounds, proactively address safety concerns, and provide assistance to visitors as needed. In addition, the department plays a key role in supporting special events by coordinating logistics and contributing to successful execution, which helps drive engagement and revenue. Working within the Facilities and Maintenance team offers a unique opportunity to contribute in a tranquil and picturesque setting. Team members play an essential role in safeguarding both visitors and valuable property assets, including art collections and outdoor exhibits. The role also provides the chance to interact with a diverse range of guests—from garden enthusiasts to tourists—while helping to preserve and enhance a cultural and historical treasure for future generations. What will you be doing? As the Director of Facilities, you will assist in providing strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of the three core functions of facilities management: daily operations (including custodial and event set-ups), facility maintenance and construction. This role serves as a member of management and collaborates across the organization. Essential Functions & Responsibilities - General Provides leadership, management and training to all housekeeping and maintenance staff; maintains a positive team culture. Supervises contract services associated with facilities maintenance, custodial operations, and waste management to ensure compliance with contract terms and Cheekwood's policies and goals. Helps prepare and manage the facilities department's operating budget, monitor expenditure, obtain competitive bids, and ensures compliance with budget. Ensures adherence to safe workplace practices and maintains safe, well-organized, and clean work areas and storage facilities. Ensures equipment and carts are inventoried, well-maintained, properly stored and in good working order. Holds weekly staff logistics meetings and represents the facilities team at Cheekwood's weekly logistics meetings and monthly safety committee meetings. Ensure repairs, maintenance, construction, building and safety codes and other regulations comply with applicable laws and follow Cheekwood guidelines. Performs other duties, as assigned. Management of the Facilities Department's Three Core Functional Areas Daily Operations In collaboration with the Housekeeping Manager organizes housekeeping support for Cheekwood' s daily public operations, including highly attended festivals and programs. Maintains a constant awareness of the guest experience to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and safety for all visitors. Reviews and approves proposed staffing levels, including use of contract labor and in-house housekeeping staff. Oversee the preparation of spaces and setup for in-house meetings, rental events, and special events and attends events as necessary. Facilities Maintenance Supervises the daily activities of managers, maintenance technicians and maintenance vendors Coordinates and manages preventive maintenance and repair of all buildings, parking lots and roadways, fleet vehicles, and utilities and infrastructure. Manages an efficient work order system and the interdepartmental communications to ensure the repairs of facilities, infrastructure, and equipment meet acceptable timelines. Regularly updates and evaluates the facilities condition index to identify short-term and long-term improvement needs and to prioritize deferred restoration and critical repairs. Construction Projects Assists in planning and managing major capital projects, including new projects, renovations and large capital repairs. Functions as a project manager in all phases of capital construction, including planning and design, budget development, implementation and project close-out. Responsible for communicating project-related information to leadership to facilitate effective decision-making. Collaborates with operations and leadership teams to ensure facilities and construction projects do not impede upon Cheekwood's public and special event operations.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred, and at least five years of management experience. that demonstrates progressively responsible leadership roles, preferably in a complex organization. Experience in non-profit and/or facility operations preferred. Experience in budgetary and cost controls. Strategic thinker, self-motivated, detail-oriented. Effective written and oral communication, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated leadership skills, including motivating, developing, and coaching staff and providing. effective management and delegation in a complex and dynamic environment. Proficiency in computer software as needed. This is a salaried position and must have the availability to work flexible hours, including nights/weekends. Must have valid driver's license.
