Forklift Operator Job Description This role supports warehouse and material handling operations by safely operating forklifts to move, load, unload, and stage materials at a Des Moines facility. The Forklift Operator ensures accurate handling of steel and other materials, maintains inventory integrity, and keeps the work area clean, organized, and focused on safety. Responsibilities Operate sit-down and stand-up forklifts to move steel and other materials safely and efficiently. Load and unload trucks while following established safety procedures and best practices. Transport materials to and from production, storage, and staging areas as directed. Verify materials against paperwork, such as pick tickets or shipping documents, and follow inventory procedures. Use RF scanners and other warehouse tools to support accurate picking, shipping, receiving, and inventory control. Perform basic forklift inspections before use and promptly report any maintenance or safety issues. Support shipping and receiving activities, including loading, unloading, and staging materials for outbound and inbound shipments. Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused work area by following housekeeping standards. Follow all safety policies, warehouse procedures, and company guidelines at all times. Work collaboratively with team members and communicate effectively to support smooth warehouse operations. Essential Skills Prior forklift experience, preferably in a steel or heavy material handling environment. Proficiency operating sit-down forklifts in a warehouse or industrial setting. Proficiency operating stand-up forklifts in a warehouse or industrial setting. Experience with material handling, including loading, unloading, and staging materials. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and remain on your feet throughout the shift. Strong attention to safety and detail when handling materials and operating equipment. Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with steel or other heavy materials in a warehouse or production environment. Experience in shipping and receiving operations, including loading and unloading trucks. Familiarity with RF scanners for inventory, picking, and tracking materials. Experience with inventory procedures and verification of materials against paperwork. Comfort working in a structured environment with established safety policies and warehouse procedures. Work Environment This position is based in a warehouse environment on a first-shift schedule. You will work around steel and other heavy materials and regularly use sit-down and stand-up forklifts, RF scanners, and standard shipping and receiving equipment. The role is physically active, requiring you to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds throughout the shift. The facility emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and adherence to safety policies to ensure a secure and efficient workplace. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $20.00/hr.
