Forklift Operator Job Description This role involves operating sit-down forklifts in a refrigerated and freezer warehouse environment to pick, pack, move, and organize various orders and materials. You will support daily warehouse operations by handling inventory, performing inspections, and assisting with general labor tasks as needed while working safely and efficiently in cold conditions. Responsibilities Operate sit-down forklifts safely and efficiently to move, load, and unload materials and products throughout the warehouse. Pick and pack various orders and materials according to work orders, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Perform regular inventory counts and assist with maintaining accurate inventory records using basic computer and inventory systems. Inspect materials, products, and equipment for damage or defects and report any issues promptly. Handle general labor tasks as needed, including organizing pallets, staging materials, and maintaining a clean and orderly work area. Work consistently in refrigerated and freezer environments while following all safety and PPE requirements. Lift and move items weighing 40 pounds or more as part of daily warehouse operations. Follow established safety procedures, equipment operating guidelines, and warehouse policies at all times. Essential Skills At least 6 months of previous forklift operating experience, preferably with sit-down forklifts. Proven ability to work comfortably in refrigerated and freezer environments. Ability to lift and move 40 pounds or more on a regular basis. Basic computer skills and comfort using inventory systems and related warehouse software. Strong attention to safety and adherence to warehouse operating procedures. Ability to perform general labor and material handling tasks in a fast-paced environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in cold storage or similar temperature-controlled warehouse environments. Familiarity with basic inventory control processes such as cycle counting and stock rotation. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work both independently and as part of a team. Work Environment This position is based in a cold storage warehouse environment, with temperatures around 32°F in refrigerated areas and approximately -10°F in freezer sections. Personal protective equipment is provided to help maintain comfort in low temperatures. The forklift used in the freezer has a heated cabin maintained at roughly 50°F. The schedule runs Monday through Friday starting at 7:00 a.m., offering a consistent daytime shift. You will work primarily with sit-down forklifts, standard warehouse material handling tools, and basic computer-based inventory systems in a structured, safety-focused facility. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portland, ME. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $22.00/hr.
