Forklift Operator Job Description This role involves operating a single propane sit-down forklift in an outdoor concrete yard to handle concrete and asphalt products. You will move, stage, and reorganize materials, operate pallet-handling machinery and a stretch wrapper, and perform general labor tasks such as pallet sorting and yard cleaning. The position requires comfort with outdoor work, heavy lifting, and working in varying weather conditions. Responsibilities Operate a single propane sit-down forklift safely and efficiently in an outdoor concrete yard. Handle concrete and asphalt products, including loading, unloading, and moving materials throughout the yard. Use a forklift to load pallets into a pallet injector and start the machine according to operating procedures. Run the stretch wrapper machine and make adjustments as needed to ensure secure and consistent wrapping of products. Organize and reorganize pallets and wrapped stacks to maintain a clean, efficient, and well-structured yard layout. Perform material staging to support production and shipping activities. Complete approximately 25% manual pallet sorting to ensure quality and proper organization of materials. Carry out general labor duties such as sweeping with a broom, picking up broken concrete blocks, and shoveling debris to keep the work area clean and safe. Use pallet jacks and other basic material handling equipment as required. Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while operating machinery and performing physical tasks. Work collaboratively with production and yard teams to meet daily and weekly production goals. Adapt to varying workload demands, including overtime, while maintaining high standards of safety and productivity. Essential Skills At least 2 years of sit-down forklift operating experience. Proven experience with outdoor labor and comfort working in the elements. Ability to perform heavy lifting as part of daily duties. Experience with material handling in a production or yard environment. Ability to operate machinery such as pallet injectors and stretch wrappers or similar equipment. Familiarity with working in a concrete yard or similar industrial outdoor setting. Capability to perform general labor tasks including sweeping, shoveling, and manual pallet sorting. Strong attention to safety and adherence to operating procedures. Reliability in working extended shifts and overtime when needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with single propane sit-down forklifts in an outdoor environment. Background in handling concrete and asphalt products or other heavy building materials. Experience with staging materials for production or shipping. Comfort using pallet jacks and other basic material handling tools. Ability to maintain organization in a busy yard with frequent movement of pallets and wrapped stacks. Willingness to perform repetitive physical tasks and manual sorting. Work Environment This is an outdoor, labor-intensive role in a concrete yard, working around concrete and asphalt products and production equipment. The position offers two schedule options: one third shift from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and one first shift from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. There are typically 10-20 hours of overtime available each week, depending on workload. The work involves heavy lifting, manual pallet sorting, and regular use of a propane sit-down forklift, pallet jacks, and machinery such as pallet injectors and stretch wrappers. You will work in all weather conditions, so appropriate outdoor work attire and footwear suitable for a concrete yard environment are necessary. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lyndhurst, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
