About Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build decent, affordable homes and provide home ownership opportunities to qualified families who live and work in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay is an independent, locally operated and funded affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Position Summary The Director of Development is the affiliate's senior fundraising leader and a member of the leadership team, working in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors, responsible for leading Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay's fundraising, donor engagement, and development operations. This role secures philanthropic revenue, cultivates donor relationships, oversees fundraising campaigns, and implements strategic development initiatives that advance the organization's mission - working across individual, corporate, foundation, faith, public, and in-kind sources. This position requires strong relationship-building skills, strategic thinking, and a commitment to driving sustainable revenue growth in support of Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay's mission. The right candidate is a self-starter who can set direction and execute it, is as comfortable with a database and dashboard as with a donor meeting, and is energized by working across every giving sector rather than specializing in one. The Director also supervises and mentors the Fundraising and Development Manager, building a small, high-functioning development team.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Fundraising & Revenue Development Plan, implement, and manage annual fundraising strategies to meet organizational revenue goals Develop an annual development plan with revenue targets by source, aligned with the affiliate's strategic plan, operating budget, and construction schedule; report progress to the CEO monthly and to the Board as its Development Committee regularly. Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle from initiating contacts through stewardship. Meet specific annual fundraising goals and contact metrics set by the Chief Executive Officer. Lead donor cultivations, solicitation, and stewardship efforts, including individual giving, major donors, and monthly donor programs. Personally manage a portfolio of major and mid-level donors and partner with the CEO and Board members on principal-gift strategy, joint cultivation, and solicitations, preparing them for donor meetings and accompanying them on calls. Establish or strengthen a planned giving program and legacy society. Develop and execute online fundraising initiatives and seasonal appeals. Secure and strengthen corporate and community employee volunteer partnerships with regional employers, financial institutions, homebuilders, and suppliers. Donor & Community Engagement Steward donors through personalized communication, meetings, and engagement activities. Oversee donor recognition initiatives and maintain accurate records in the organization's donor database (Bloomerang). Plan and coordinate fundraising events, community fundraising, and donor appreciation events. Coordinate with construction and volunteer staff so that build-site engagement converts to sustained financial partnerships; grow in-kind giving and ReStore donor relationships in coordination with ReStore leadership. Collaborate with program staff to develop compelling proposals, reports, and presentations for donors. Support organization-wide events, outreach efforts, and public communications as needed. Serve as a visible ambassador for the affiliate at community, civic, and industry events. Board & Volunteer Engagement Staff the Board's Development Committee; equip Board members with tools, training, and prospect assignments so that every member participates meaningfully in fundraising. Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and Board Chair on fundraising strategy, donor relationships, and the Board's role in resource development; provide regular briefings so that Board members are informed, confident, and equipped to open doors. Recruit, organize, and steward fundraising volunteers and event committees. Staff Leadership & Mentoring Supervise, coach, and mentor assigned staff and foster a collaborative culture of philanthropy across staff, volunteers, and the Board, so that everyone in the organization sees a role in resource development. Administrative & Organizational Support Analyze donor data to tailor fundraising approaches. Oversee the grants program including prospect research, calendar, proposals, compliance, and reporting for foundation, corporate and Habitat for Humanity International sources, working with the Fundraising and Development Manager, and subject matter experts; support the CEO and finance staff on public funding (e.g. CalHome, county and city housing funds) and award compliance. Manage the development budget and ensure gift acceptance, donor privacy, and recognition policies are current and consistently applied. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience Education and Experience:
Minimum 3 years experience in nonprofit fundraising, development, donor relations, or similar role, including experience leading a development function, supervising and developing staff, and a demonstrated record of personally closing five-figure gifts from individuals and institutions. Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, or a related field; equivalent experience considered. Reliable transportation and ability to work on site weekly at office and as needed at partner locations throughout Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
Preferred:
familiarity with the Habitat model; grants and public-funding experience; bilingual English/Spanish; CFRE or AFP engagement. Required Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and cultivate relationships with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrate high level professionalism in all written and verbal communications, appearance, and interactions. Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding fundraising goals. Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising efforts through storytelling. Strong project management and organizational skills and attention to detail. Proficiency with Boomerang/CRM, Microsoft Office, and marketing tools such as Canvas; comfortable building and reading fundraising dashboards. Ability to work independently toward big picture goals and effectively collaborate with others, including as a trusted partner to executive leadership and Board members. Experience staffing a volunteer board or committee and motivating volunteers in fundraising roles. Physical Demands:
The Director of Development will experience frequent sitting and repetitive motion. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends. Ability to lift 30 pounds. This position requires both off-site and in-person work at a desk and at community events and partnership sites.
