Position Purpose:
The Major Gift Officer plays a central role in establishing trusted relationships with our community of donors with an emphasis on soliciting and stewarding major gifts. This position offers an exciting opportunity to help refugees and immigrants find safety and fulfillment in their new lives through the growth of philanthropic support to the Institute's mission. This is a new position, and the second major gift officer, on a growing development team that consists of director of development, annual giving manager, development associate grant writer, marketing and communications manager, marketing and communications coordinator and manager of volunteers and community partnerships. The role reports to the Director of Development. The role is a new permanent position, and the second development officer for a nine-person Development team that includes individual giving, major gifts, grants and contracts, marketing communications, and volunteer programs.
Primary responsibilities:
  • The primary directive of this role is to develop new major gift relationships, strengthen relationships with existing supporters and grow individual donations.
  • Qualify and/or manage a new portfolio of up to 150 individual major gift prospects with the capacity to make annual contributions greater than $25,000, or major gifts greater than $100,000.
  • Manage a portfolio of up to 15 current and prospective family foundations, institutional donors, and event sponsors, with a focus on deepening engagement and increasing financial support.
  • Develop and execute strategies for discovery and engagement, present opportunities to support mission critical projects, complete solicitations and achieve fundraising goals.
  • Maintain and strengthen organization reputation, inspire donor loyalty, and increase visibility with external stakeholders.
Secondary responsibilities:
  • Secure planned gifts, develop and promote opportunities to provide bequest and legacy gifts.
  • Represent the organization at outreach and special events.
  • Provide support to the Institute's annual fundraising event, New Americans New Beginnings, by recruiting guests and table hosts, solicitating live auction items, and stewarding event donors (in collaboration with the annual giving manager and development director).
  • Write and edit donor proposals and stewardship content that inspires and recognize donor impact. This includes limited responsibility for family or community foundation proposals and reports.
  • Conduct and facilitate prospect research as needed. Position Requirements (Experience and Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of five to seven years' work experience in individual giving and major gifts. Maximum salary listed is available only to candidates with seven or more years of work experience in major gifts fundraising or a related field.
  • Three years of additional work experience in a similar environment would be considered as a substitute for a bachelor's degree.
  • Strong relationship, collaboration, and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently are essential.
  • Experience utilizing donor management CRMs to record and report donor visits, communication and engagement.
  • Sensitive to privacy and professionalism in working with major donors.
  • Occasional work during the evenings and weekends may be necessary.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, car insurance, and own vehicle to drive within the metro area.
Preferred experience:
  • Experience working in a multicultural setting, knowledge of U.
S. refugee and immigration policy, human rights, or related topics.
Physical Demands:
  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity.
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying.
