Scope Summary:
Facilitate subject matter expert (SME) workshops for CompTIA certification and exam development; train and guide SMEs in exam development best practices in group workshop settings; prepare for and manage workshop to meet development goals. Note - Candidate must be in the Chicago area and willing to come into our Downers Grove office 50% of the time to help facilitate workshops. The other 50% of the time can be remote. Travel costs are not expensible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilitate on-site and some virtual exam development subject matter expert (SME) workshops, including job task analysis, item writing, and standard-setting workshops. Prepare workshop documentation ahead of and during workshops, and manage logistics before, during, and after workshops. Maintain SME rapport and continued engagement with the process. Utilize the item development database (i.e. Exam Developer) for workshop planning and facilitation. Work with the Senior Manager, Workshop Facilitation to determine workshop schedules, approaches, and resource needs. Create, update, and manage workshop materials, schedules, tracking documents, and communications using Microsoft Office tools to support effective workshop execution and reporting. Attend and support multiple SME dinners each quarter, serving as a representation of the exam development team to build relationships, encourage engagement, and support ongoing SME collaboration. Support workshop follow-up activities by coordinating post-workshop communications, organizing completed documentation, and ensuring required materials are finalized and shared with appropriate team members.
Key Performance Metrics:
Workshop goals: Each workshop has clear, measurable deliverables and goals. The facilitator leads the workshop in a way that keeps SMEs focused, supports productive use of time, and ensures CompTIA's exam development processes and standards are consistently followed while meeting development targets.
SME feedback:
SMEs provide post-workshop feedback. The feedback is based on their experiences in the workshop, the extent to which they felt they understood the goals, and other measures of satisfaction. The person in this role should a) receive overall positive feedback in terms of the workshop quality, and b) demonstrably incorporate SME feedback in their approach to the workshops when appropriate.
Planning and Coordination:
Effectively collaborates with the Senior Manager and cross-functional partners (exam development, psychometrics, and editorial) to plan and manage workshops that are appropriately resourced, aligned to project timelines, and support the broader exam development process.
Skills and Qualifications:
Ability to facilitate complex, goal-driven workshops with subject matter experts, including leading both large and small group discussions to productive outcomes. Strong facilitation and instructional skills, with the ability to train adult learners on exam development concepts, processes, and best practices in a workshop setting. Demonstrated ability to engage and manage diverse SME groups, build rapport, and maintain participation while keeping workshops focused on defined goals. Working knowledge of certification or assessment development best practices, including job task analysis, item writing, and standard-setting activities. Ability to provide clear, constructive, real-time feedback to SMEs to improve technical writing quality and adherence to development standards. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain accurate workshop documentation before, during, and after workshops. Ability to track progress against workshop deliverables and adjust facilitation approaches as needed to ensure development goals are met. Demonstrated ability to follow and reinforce confidentiality, accreditation requirements, and organizational standards, and ensure SME adherence during workshops. Proficiency with item development or content management systems used to write, review, and track exam content and support workshop planning and execution. Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with exam development, psychometric, and editorial partners and contribute facilitation expertise to project planning.
