You'll bring that energy to the sales floor every day and build a team that shares it. Ready to step up, run the floor, and grow into the leader who runs the whole store? As Assistant General Manager, you'll lead the store as a Manager On Duty, coach the Associates who keep it running, and learn every side of the business alongside your General Manager. This is a leadership role based in one of our Books-A-Million retail store locations, built for leaders who are ready to grow. Role Summary The Assistant General Manager manages the day-to-day operation of the store as a Manager On Duty in conjunction with the management team. Working alongside the General Manager, you'll assist with overseeing the execution of all aspects of store operations — providing effective leadership, achieving maximum sales and profits, controlling budgetary expenses, and managing the store team through training, development, and accountability. Every shift is a chance to sharpen the skills it takes to lead a store: ownership of results, a love of books, and a knack for bringing out the best in people. Book retail is always evolving, and great stores stay connected to what readers are discovering, loving, and looking for next. Here, you'll help shape how your community finds its next favorite book, author, or story. Role Responsibilities Store Leadership & Results
  • Help create a store that feels welcoming, vibrant, and connected to the community around it.
  • Set the pace for the whole store by leading your team and running the operation in line with company policies, procedures, and guidelines, bringing people together, creating an exceptional customer experience, and driving strong business results through the decisions you make every day.
  • Grow as a leader with every shift you lead. As Manager On Duty, partner with the management team to set expectations, create momentum, and make sure the team and store are ready to deliver their best each day.
  • Be the leader your store can count on—create a safe, secure environment where associates can thrive, customers feel welcome, and the store runs with care and confidence. Team Leadership
  • In partnership with the General Manager, build a team that brings energy, passion, and great service to every customer connection by helping attract the right talent and setting new associates up to thrive from day one.
  • Grow the next wave of booksellers and store leaders by training and developing Associates, because the best leaders grow other leaders.
  • Grow into a leader who brings out the best in others by partnering with the General Manager to strengthen performance, build confidence, recognize contributions, and create accountability across the team.
  • Keep everyone connected and moving in the same direction through daily briefings and weekly meetings that ensure every associate knows the goals, the plan, and why it matters.
  • Set every day up for success by creating schedules and daily agendas that match what the store's business needs most. Customer Experience & Store Standards
  • Make every customer feel like they belong by setting the highest standard for customer service and turning customer challenges into opportunities to build lasting loyalty.
  • Give customers something great to notice by maintaining category merchandising and cleanliness and ensuring operational efficiency, so every table and shelf offers something worth picking up. Store Operations
  • Handle the behind-the-scenes details that keep the store running smoothly, from dropping off the bank deposit to picking up the change order as needed.
  • Keep the café ready to serve by making sure essential supplies are always stocked, fresh, and available when the team and customers need them. Additional Responsibilities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Role Qualifications Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a supervisor role

  • Ability to supervise a large number of associates
  • Strong decision-making, communication, and merchandising skills
  • Successful completion of all required background screenings
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A college degree in a business-related field, bringing the business sense to read the numbers, spot opportunities, and turn insight into results.
  • Comfort with technology and transactions, using computers and cash registers accurately while staying curious about new systems and tools.

  • A genuine love of books and reading — with the curiosity to know what's new, what's trending, and what customers are excited about.
  • An ownership mindset — taking action, making decisions with confidence, and holding yourself and your team accountable for results.
  • A commitment to connection and community — building genuine relationships with customers, associates, and local partners, and creating a store that feels welcoming, relevant, and truly part of the neighborhood.
