Job Description

Johnson C. Smith University is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and collaborative Grant Management Specialist to join the Office of Government Sponsored Programs and Research. This position plays a critical role in supporting the University's growing research and sponsored programs initiatives by assisting faculty and staff throughout the full lifecycle of grants and contracts—from proposal development and submission to award management and closeout. Reporting to the Director of Government Sponsored Programs and Research, the Grant Management Specialist will provide administrative and technical support that helps advance research, innovation, and institutional excellence across the University. This exciting opportunity offers the chance to work closely with faculty, administrators, and external funding agencies while contributing to projects that positively impact academic programs, research initiatives, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Successful candidates will demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, attention to detail, and a commitment to ensuring compliance with institutional and sponsor guidelines related to grant administration and sponsored research. ________________________________________________________________________________
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support faculty and staff throughout the grant proposal development and submission process.
  • Assist with identifying and interpreting funding opportunities from federal, state, local, and private agencies.
  • Provide administrative and technical support related to grant compliance, documentation, and reporting.
  • Support pre-award, post-award, and grant closeout activities in accordance with institutional and sponsor guidelines.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners to support sponsored research initiatives and strategic institutional priorities.
  • Assist with monitoring grant-funded projects to ensure compliance, efficiency, and alignment with funding requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist with financial and administrative reporting requirements.
  • Support training initiatives and provide guidance related to grant processes and compliance standards.
Bachelor's degree preferred with three to five years of experience in grant administration, sponsored programs, research administration, or related work involving federally, state, or locally funded projects in either a public or private sector environment. Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification is preferred but not required. The successful candidate should possess knowledge of grant and contract compliance requirements, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR). Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications, along with the ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. Experience in higher education, research administration, or government-sponsored programs is highly desirable. To apply, please include a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three supervisory references including the most recent supervisor. Finalists for this position are subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
